As droves of hopefuls descended upon this untamed land, small settlements began to emerge, each with its own unique charm and character. Kalgoorlie, Coolgardie, and Leonora were among the towns that sprung up, transforming the once desolate landscapes into lively hubs of activity.

It was during this time that iconic gold mines such as the Super Pit and the Golden Mile were established, forever etching the Eastern Goldfields into the annals of Australia's mining history. These mines, still operational today, serve as a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of those who sought their fortunes in this land of opportunity.

While the lure of gold may have initially drawn people to the Eastern Goldfields, the region's natural wonders have continued to captivate visitors throughout the years. From vast salt lakes to towering granite formations, the landscapes here are nothing short of awe-inspiring.

The mesmerizing beauty of the Great Victoria Desert, stretching across the northern part of the Eastern Goldfields, never fails to leave visitors speechless. This rugged and remote landscape, with its sprawling sand dunes and unique flora and fauna, remains an enigmatic treasure.

Venture further south, and you'll encounter the stunning Fitzgerald River National Park, an ecological hotspot teeming with biodiversity. Here, rare and endangered species find refuge, roaming through untamed wilderness where tranquility reigns supreme.

This book is based upon a journey through the eastern goldfields that was made by the author whilst botanising in Western Australia. Expecting to find a heavily industrialised area, it was a most pleasant surprise to discover the colour, charm and history of the goldfields with its many tales of gold finds. The roads through the goldfields were long and straight passing through vast desert areas and almost devoid of traffic. There are many diversions from the main route one can make, depending on the time available to the traveller.
The goldfields have interesting flora and fauna. They are a popular route travelled by tourists during the wildflower season. It is recorded that residents of Kalgoorlie used to visit Goongarrie by special “flower trains” in the early 1900s.
A repeated story in the goldfields is that a prospector finds gold, a gold rush occurs, the gold source becomes depleted (often rapidly), the prospectors and miners leave the area and the town becomes a ghost town. Often all that remains of a town will be some rusting metal debris or dilapidated housing. The present picture in 2014 is of enormous amounts of ore being mined to obtain small quantities of gold at a greatly increasing relative cost. Many gold mines are therefore now closing until the price of gold on the markets increases. In contrast to this storyline is Kalgoorlie with its Super Pit.
The stories about past gold finds are varied with often several versions for each find. The accuracy of many of the stories is unclear and one must usually take them “with a pinch of salt.” Many subsequent good finds were not close to the vicinity of the initial find. The initial find would cause great interest in the area and a large increase in prospecting and sometimes with unimaginably rich results. However, it was often the case that the initial prospectors finding a gold source did not benefit hugely from their find.
The history of gold prospecting and mining in the goldfields is exemplified throughout by town names, street names, building names and statues that are associated with the prospectors and surveyors. Such naming is found often as far away as in Perth.
Many of the surveyors and mine workers were to later become famous in other ways. Thus a young geologist named Herbert Hoover from America was later to become 31st president of USA. The explorer John Forrest visited the area in 1869 and was later made Premier of Western Australia.
Stories abound about accidents in the mines, murders of residents in the mining areas and air disasters.
