The Alluring Coneflowers

The name of this genus refers to the blood red subterranean parts. They are known as the Bloodworts. The plants are hermophrodytic and are pollinated by birds, insects or small mammals. This plant family was first described by Robert Brown in 1810.
This is a relatively small family of 14 genera and about 1,900 species worldwide, occurring in Western Australia, New Guinea, South Africa and America. In Australia there are 7 genera and about 85 species. They occur in the main in the south west of Western Australia. Plants in this family generally have 6 stamens, except for Haemodorum which has 3 stamens.
The leaves of the family are useful in identification of the species. They arise from a basal sheath and usually present as a leathery strap with parallel veins.
This book is intended as an to the Kangaroo Paws, Conostylis and other related species in the family Haemodoraceae that can be found in Western Australia. This book only contains illustrations of some species to be found in this family. The species illustrated are a selection of those that one could be expected to find with ease. It is the hope of the author that this book will add to the enjoyment of those travelling in Western Australia and will enable identification of the genera and species in the family Haemodoraceae and will awaken an interest in general in wildflowers in Western Australia and in particular an interest in this most interesting plant family.
