The Power of the Painted Image

Portraits of women allow artists to explore and convey various emotions and narratives. They have the ability to evoke a range of feelings, from sorrow and longing to joy and contentment. These artworks often serve as a mirror to society, reflecting the cultural, social, and political dynamics of their time.

Furthermore, these portraits are not just depictions of physical beauty but also celebrations of femininity. They highlight the unique qualities and strengths that women possess, challenging societal norms and redefining beauty standards.

The Influence of the Masters

Throughout art history, many renowned painters have left an indelible mark on the genre of women's portraits. One cannot discuss this subject without mentioning the iconic works of Leonardo da Vinci, Johannes Vermeer, and Frida Kahlo.

Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, for instance, continues to be one of the most famous portraits in the world. The enigmatic smile and the detailed rendering of the subject's face have captivated audiences for centuries, sparking countless debates and interpretations.

On the other hand, Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring is a testament to the delicacy and subtlety with which an artist can portray a woman. The piercing gaze and the luminous pearl earring create an atmosphere of intrigue that draws viewers into the painting.

Frida Kahlo, known for her self-portraits, delved deep into her own experiences as a woman, captivating audiences with her raw emotion and unapologetic approach to depicting herself. Her portraits serve as an empowering statement, challenging societal norms and stereotypes.

The Modern Interpretations

While the traditional approach to women's portraits continues to inspire contemporary artists, there has been a rise in more unconventional and daring interpretations in recent years. Artists are exploring different techniques, mediums, and narratives to capture the multifaceted nature of women.

Some artists focus on highlighting the diversity and individuality of women, celebrating their unique features and stories. Others use symbolism and abstract forms to convey the complexities of femininity, inviting viewers to interpret the art through their own experiences.

These paintings hold within them a timeless beauty that continues to inspire and captivate us.

Portraits of women are not just about the physical attributes; they tell stories, convey emotions, and challenge our perspectives. They remind us of the strength, resilience, and enigma that lies within every woman.

So, the next time you find yourself in the presence of a captivating portrait of a woman, take a moment to appreciate the artistry and the profound beauty it represents. Allow yourself to delve into the depths of the image and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of women's portraits.

Painterly portraits of women

I organized 80 portraits of women from the Old Masters to the early 20th century as outstanding examples of the painterly portrait, beautiful in both brushwork and subject. These paintings often turned out to be zenith moments in what these artists were trying to do with their art. Sometimes even going full supernova on art history in the cases of Velazquez, Rembrandt and Vermeer. These works show how these different painters were in fact similar. By the way they all accessed the full power of paint, brushwork and color in bringing their portraits to life. Showcasing the unique magnificence that can be achieved with the painterly portrait.

The idea

As you can tell, I have always felt painterly portraits excelled at the subject of women. Part of the reason why I wanted to make this book is to collect the best of these portraits to see how it all fits together. To me, keeping the focus on women makes it easier to enjoy portraiture as whole because the task or the intentions of the painter becomes clearer. Men and women tend to project different kind of energies when they are painted. It is a lot easier to view them apart then having to switch back and forth your perceptions when they are together in the same book. As a theme of painting, each is deserving of their own volume of portraiture.

What is Painterly?

Painterly is often associated with bravura brushwork or alla prima painting but there can be more to it than that. Paint can be transparent, organized into color shapes, drift into pure abstraction, into impasto, be blurred or combine all those effects together. The goal being is to harness oil paint's abstract properties and design of the picture in order to achieve a new reality , giving the portrait more life. I believe the more you access the full power of paint, the more you get back. These are 80 of the finest examples of that philosophy in motion.
