When you're going to join two pieces of leather together, glue is essential. Even though the joint will eventually be stitched together with glue, you should still use glue. Non-water-based contact cement is my favorite glue. This glue is very affordable and can be purchased in tubes at Dollar Stores. There's no reason to skip this step. You can glue your edges together to keep the seam or joint in place. This will allow you to punch your holes and ensure that your stitches are 100% vertical. You must apply the glue to both pieces. After it dries, let it dry for a few minutes until it is tacky or shiny. If the glue is left to dry too long, it can be reapplied right over the area you have glued. It's important to use as little glue as possible while still ensuring good adhesion to the edges. There should be very little leakage from the seam.
