Different Athens Travel: Travel To History Through Architecture And Landscape
Athens, the capital city of Greece, is a mesmerizing blend of ancient history, stunning architecture, and picturesque landscapes. Its rich cultural heritage and prominent landmarks have attracted countless travelers from around the world. This article will take you on a virtual journey through Athens, exploring its historical sites, architectural wonders, and natural beauty.
A Glimpse into Athens' Glorious Past
Athens is often referred to as the cradle of Western civilization, and rightly so. The city has a history spanning over 3,000 years and has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous empires, including the Ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. The remnants of these civilizations can still be found throughout Athens, offering a unique window into the past.
The Acropolis, perched high on a rocky hill, is the most iconic symbol of Athens. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to several ancient structures, including the Parthenon, Erechtheion, and Propylaea. As you walk among these majestic ruins, you can't help but feel a sense of awe and admiration for the architectural skills of the ancient Greeks.

Another must-visit historical site in Athens is the Ancient Agora. This marketplace was the center of Athenian public life, where philosophers, politicians, and traders gathered. Today, you can explore the ruins of the Stoa of Attalos, Temple of Hephaestus, and the Agora Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts from ancient Greece.
Athens' Architectural Marvels
Athens is a city where ancient ruins seamlessly merge with modern architectural wonders. One such example is the Panathenaic Stadium, also known as the Kallimarmaro. This marble stadium is a reconstruction of the ancient Panathenaic Stadium and hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Take a walk around this magnificent structure and imagine the roar of the crowd during ancient sporting events.
The National Archaeological Museum is a treasure trove for history and art enthusiasts. With its vast collection of ancient artifacts, including sculptures, pottery, and jewelry, the museum brings Athens' history to life. Marvel at the intricate details of the Mask of Agamemnon or the Aphrodite of Milos, and gain a deeper understanding of the ancient world.
For those with a passion for contemporary architecture, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre is a must-visit. Designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, this modern complex houses the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera. Take a stroll through its landscaped gardens or catch a performance at the open-air theater.
Exploring Athens' Natural Beauty
While Athens is famous for its historical sites and architecture, it also boasts stunning natural landscapes. Mount Lycabettus, towering above the city, offers breathtaking panoramic views of Athens, especially during sunset. Climb to the top or take a scenic cable car ride to immerse yourself in the city's beauty.
The Athenian Riviera stretches along the coastline from the city center to the southern suburbs. Here, you'll find pristine sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and luxurious resorts. Spend a day sunbathing, swimming, or indulge in water sports, and experience the perfect blend of city and beach life.
One of Athens' hidden gems is the National Garden, a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city. Originally designed as the Royal Garden, it offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of Athens. Take a leisurely walk among the lush vegetation, visit the small zoo, or simply relax in the shade of ancient trees.
Exploring Athens: Tips and Recommendations
When planning your Athens travel, it's essential to consider a few tips and recommendations to make the most of your visit.
Firstly, be prepared for the warm Mediterranean climate. Athens can get scorching hot during the summer months, so make sure to pack lightweight and breathable clothing, sunscreen, and a hat.
Secondly, take advantage of the Athens City Pass, which gives you access to multiple attractions, including the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum, while also offering discounts on transportation and other activities.
Finally, don't miss the chance to savor the local cuisine. Greek food is renowned worldwide, and Athens boasts numerous traditional tavernas and gourmet restaurants. Indulge in dishes like moussaka, souvlaki, and baklava, and wash it down with a glass of ouzo or Greek wine.
In
Athens, with its ancient history, magnificent architecture, and natural beauty, is a traveler's paradise. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or simply someone looking to immerse themselves in a thriving cultural environment, Athens has something to offer everyone. So pack your bags, put on your walking shoes, and embark on a journey through time in this captivating city.

You want to understand not only ancient but also modern Athens in a guided tour?
This is the book for you!
(Look also for the other books in the series)
This book’s purpose is to help you understand what travel guides don’t explain.
You can find a lot of books on ancient Athens. If you get there, a guided tour will give you all the information you will need.
But what about Athens in the centuries that followed? What about the old houses, old churches, mosques, baths and other obscure sights you stumble upon everywhere?
This book, written by a specialist of Athens and including a large number of colour photos and detailed maps, along with presenting all the major sights of Athens of all times, will also help you understand the city of today and not feel lost as a visitor.
This is done through three itineraries:
The first itinerary will lead you through Plaka, the multi-layered core of the historical centre of Athens, built above the ancient city and inextricably mixed with it, where you will find monuments from all periods of Athenian history, from Antiquity to modern times through the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
The ‘Monumental Axis’ is the proposed second itinerary in case you want to discover the main monuments of neoclassical Athens, the modern city created from 1833 onwards as the capital of the newly founded Greek State.
The third itinerary corresponds to what is officially known as the ‘Great Promenade’. It is a pedestrian zone linking most of the major archaeological sites of Athens. Although these sites are chronologically anterior to most of the sights presented previously, they are presented last.
The reason is that the ‘Great Promenade’ was created only at the beginning of the 21st century, linking sites that were previously ‘lost' in the urban fabric of the modern city and often difficult to find and access. The image they present today is largely the result of these recent interventions, therefore this book recommends this order in their visit.
However, if you prefer, you can always follow the ‘Great Promenade’ and visit these archaeological sites before following the other two proposed itineraries.
The author of this book holds a PhD in Architectural History from the National Technical University of Athens and a master in heritage preservation from the Ecole de Chaillot of Paris. He is a professor at the University of the Peloponnese, where he teaches these subjects. He is also a fervent cultural hiker.
His travel books (mostly about Greece) are addressed to you, the reader with a special interest in cultural sites. In order to help you better understand and remember these sites, they are written as a guided tour. They include encounters with interesting people and other personal travel experiences which will help you organize your own trip beyond the tourist clichés.
