Who hasn't started that sentence at one time or another during their lives, only to let it trail off, unfinished and unfulfilled? Pen Quiller, who describes the person she was then as ‘an ordinary woman in her fifties leading an unremarkable life in suburban England’, was determined that wasn’t going to happen to her.

In 'Travels with a Penguin Book 1: USA', we saw the beginning of Pen's grand adventure. We saw her walk away from that comfortable life that had suddenly become not nearly enough, give up her job, sell her home, and set off to travel the world – her only companion a small stuffed penguin named Scott. In Book 2: New Zealand we saw her reunite with her best friend and discover the wonders of the Land of the Long White Cloud.

Now, in ‘Travels with a Penguin, Book 3: Australia’, we have a ticket to her travels in the Land Down Under. Pen samples a few of the experiences this vast and diverse continent has to offer: climbing Sydney Harbour Bridge, almost getting snowbound in the Australian Alps, riding a steam train in the Dandenong Ranges, whale watching in Hervey Bay, caring for koalas, dingoes and wombats as a volunteer at a wildlife sanctuary, riding on a stagecoach in the outback and diving at the Great Barrier Reef. Along the way she meets a dinosaur named Matilda, gets a ‘kiss’ from a Southern Right whale and proves that emus can, despite what we’ve been told, walk backwards! And Scott-the-penguin gets his own treat when they visit Phillip Island to watch the nightly Fairy penguin parade. Her only regret is that she didn’t have time to see more of this amazing country, but as she says, just one small piece of her trip, the train from Brisbane to Cairns, took as long as it would have taken her to drive from the very top of Scotland all the way across Europe to Rome, Italy! That’s a distance that can take your breath away.
