(Note: These color illustrations are from Caldecott's first books published by George Routledge & Sons. They are the more desirable illustrations than the ones reprinted by Frederick Warne & Co.)

INTERESTING FACTS:
§ Caldecott was mostly a self-taught artist who began drawing and modelling animals at an early age.
§ In 1861, at only 15 yrs old, he published his first drawing in the Illustrated London News. A sketch of a fire at the Queens Railway Hotel in Chester.
§ At age 21, Caldecott took night classes at the Manchester School of Art.
§ In 1872, he moved to London and became a successful magazine illustrator working on commission.
§ In 1877, Edmund Evans, a printer, asked Caldecott to illustrate two books for Christmas, since he had lost the services of Walter Crane. Caldecott produced two books each year until his death.
