Travel Diary Washington London Amsterdam Ghent May 2007 Travel Diary Washington D C London Amsterdam Ghent May 2007

Traveling allows us to explore the world, experience new cultures, and create unforgettable memories. In May 2007, I embarked on a remarkable journey that took me through the mesmerizing cities of Washington, London, Amsterdam, and Ghent. Join me on this travel diary as I share my adventures, insights, and the hidden gems I discovered along the way.

Washington: A Capital Experience

My journey began in the heart of the United States - Washington, D.C. Known for its iconic landmarks and significant historical sites, the capital city left me in awe. I visited the White House, where I stood in front of its grandeur and imagined the powerful decisions made within its walls. The National Mall offered a stunning view of the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, reminding me of the nation's rich history.

Exploring the Smithsonian museums was a delight for my senses. From the Air and Space Museum to the National Museum of Natural History, each had its unique charm and showcased extraordinary exhibits. The captivating art galleries at the National Gallery of Art left me inspired, and I marveled at the beauty captured by renowned artists.

Lovely London: Royalty and Charm

Next, I hopped across the Atlantic Ocean to the majestic city of London, England. The city exuded a regal charm blended with cosmopolitan vibes. The Tower of London narrated stories of monarchs and the nation's enthralling history. Walking across the Tower Bridge, I admired the breathtaking panoramic view of the River Thames.

I couldn't resist the opportunity to witness the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. The grandeur and tradition displayed during the ceremony were truly captivating. I explored the British Museum, where centuries of global history and culture were beautifully preserved. The vibrant streets of Covent Garden and Piccadilly Circus immersed me in the buzzing energy of the city.

Amsterdam: Canals and Culture

Leaving London behind, I found myself in the enchanting city of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Known for its picturesque canals and artistic heritage, Amsterdam delighted my senses at every corner. The Anne Frank House provided a poignant reminder of the atrocities of war and the resilience of the human spirit.

Wandering through the narrow streets of the Jordaan district, I discovered hidden art galleries and cozy cafes. A visit to the Van Gogh Museum allowed me to immerse myself in the brilliant works of the renowned artist. The iconic Rijksmuseum showcased masterpieces from Dutch Golden Age painters, including Rembrandt and Vermeer.

Gems of Ghent: A Belgian Delight

Continuing my European adventure, I arrived in the charming city of Ghent, Belgium. Ghent's medieval architecture and picturesque canals took me back in time. The imposing Saint Bavo's Cathedral left me in awe with its intricate design and towering spire.

Exploring the Gravensteen Castle, I witnessed the strength and history of this fascinating city. Ghent's vibrant street life and bustling squares, such as Korenmarkt and Vrijdagmarkt, provided a delightful glimpse into the local culture. Indulging in delicious Belgian chocolate and sampling fine local beer were experiences not to be missed.

My travel diary of Washington, London, Amsterdam, and Ghent in May 2007 was filled with unforgettable experiences. Each city offered its unique charm, showcasing historical wonders and cultural treasures. From the grandeur of Washington, D.C. to the regal elegance of London, the artistic heritage of Amsterdam, and the medieval charm of Ghent, this journey created lasting memories that continue to inspire my love for travel.

For anyone planning their next adventure, I highly recommend exploring these incredible cities. Pack your bags, immerse yourself in the wonders they offer, and embark on a journey that will change your perspective and broaden your horizons.

Vermeer, Rembrandt, Rubens and more art is in this personal diary of our Road Scholar / Elderhostel Art in Belgium and the Netherlands educational program, as well as stops for the Malice Domestic mystery conference in Crystal City, next to Washington, D.C., then plays and art exhibits in London.
From this trip came two short stories—“Death in Amsterdam,” and “Death in a Belgium Monasterium,” each on Kindle, and in Death in…[17 mysteries set in different parts of the world].
“Death in Amsterdam,” is in a series featuring Tony Reynolds, a CIA Agent, stationed in London. The series begins in July 1985 with “London Spy;” then “The Duchess,” in September about the Duchess of Windsor’s lost letters; followed by “Death in Amsterdam” in November. The series ends in December 1985 in the cozy thriller novel, Death in Covent Garden, based on a real crime. The short stories are on Kindle, and all are in Death in…, and yes, there might be a forthcoming story set in August, 1985. I’ll just have to go back to London!
