In 1865, Captain Smith was entrusted with the responsibility of leading several expeditions between London Victoria and various locations across the globe. These voyages aimed to establish and expand the Hbc's trade routes, ensuring the company's dominance in the ever-competitive global market.

The Treacherous Atlantic Crossing

One of Captain Smith's most grueling and epic voyages occurred in 1871. Departing from London Victoria, his ship battled turbulent waters and relentless storms as it made its way across the treacherous Atlantic Ocean. The crew's resolve was tested, but Captain Smith's leadership and unwavering determination kept their spirits high.

After weeks of sailing, they finally reached the shores of New York. This landmark achievement brought immense pride to both Captain Smith and the Hudson's Bay Company, as it showcased their ability to conquer the mighty Atlantic.

Exploring the Arctic

In addition to his transatlantic voyages, Captain Smith was also tasked with discovering new Arctic trade routes. The company believed that these routes were crucial for their expansion plans, as they offered a shortcut to lucrative markets in Asia.

During his voyages to the Arctic, Captain Smith faced numerous obstacles, including treacherous icebergs, harsh weather conditions, and the constant threat of being trapped in frozen waters. However, his determination and unwavering spirit drove him forward.

Smith's expeditions resulted in the discovery of new islands, fjords, and uncharted territories. These findings not only unlocked potential trading opportunities for the Hbc but also contributed significantly to the world's knowledge of the Arctic region.

An Unbreakable Legacy

After two decades of continuous voyages, Captain Smith retired in 1885. However, his legacy and achievements continue to inspire both seasoned mariners and aspiring explorers.

His contributions to the Hudson's Bay Company were invaluable, as he played a significant role in expanding their trade network and securing their position as a global trading powerhouse.

Captain John Smith's name is etched in the history books as an epitome of bravery, leadership, and exploration. His voyages between London Victoria during the years 1865 to 1885 will forever be remembered as remarkable feats of human endurance and discovery.

This story shines a light on an intrepid sea captain's voyages from the London Docks to Montreal and around Cape Horn to the Pacific Northwest in the last half of the 19th Century. Drawing from research on his own family history and 600 pages of Hudson's Bay Company archived logbooks, Robert Harvey tells a gripping story about the fur trade west of the Rockies and the HBC's role in trade between Canada and England. Captain James Gaudin called on all of his experience at sea to survive two shipwrecks and to sail the Horn on 16 demanding voyages. In 1873 he wed Agnes Anderson, the Metis daughter of a fur trader from England who fondly named her adventurous husband 'No Tame Cat.'
