Travel in the wheeltracks of history

The Georgian era was the high point of horse-powered travel. Roads were improving out of all recognition, the network of inns across the country provided travellers with fresh horses, food and shelter, road books and maps sent them accurately on their way. Stage and Mail coaches criss-crossed the country cutting journey times from weeks to days, or even hours compared with previous centuries. Then, in the 1840s, the railways came and an entire way of life was changed for ever. The memory of coaching days lingered on into the Victorian period with the romantic glow of past times – jolly landlords, keen-eyed drivers, dashing highwaymen, the guard with his yard of tin, Regency bucks with their curricles and phaetons… The names of the old routes still conjure up those images: The Bath Road, the Brighton Road, the Dover Road and the Great North Road. This book is for anyone interested in the Georgian era, or the history of transport but it is also for everyone who wants to turn a journey into an excursion, who prefers to take country roads as a relief from motorways, to find old inns instead of service stations and to admire villages and historic towns instead of by-passing them.
