Do you love crocheting and have a soft spot for unique and unusual animals? If the answer is yes, then you're in for a treat! In this article, we will explore the world of crocheted ugly animals and focus on one adorable creature in particular – the whale. Get ready to dive into the enchanting world of crochet and create your very own whale amigurumi. Let's get started!

Why Ugly Animals?

Ugly animals have a charm of their own. They may not be conventionally cute, but they fascinate us with their quirky features and unexpected appeal. From the blobfish to the naked mole rat, these creatures have captured our imagination. Crocheting these animals allows us to showcase their unique beauty and create something both whimsical and endearing.

What is Amigurumi?

Amigurumi is a popular form of crocheting that originated in Japan. It involves creating small, stuffed animals using yarn and a crochet hook. These adorable creatures typically have oversized heads, vibrant colors, and are stuffed to make them soft and cuddly. Amigurumi is loved by both children and adults alike, making it a perfect craft to try.

Getting Started with Whale Crochet Pattern

Before we dive into the crochet pattern, let's gather the materials you'll need to bring your whale amigurumi to life. You'll need:

  • A size G (4mm) crochet hook
  • Light blue and white worsted weight yarn
  • Safety eyes or black beads for the eyes
  • Stuffing material
  • Yarn needle for sewing
  • Scissors

Once you have your materials ready, it's time to start crocheting your whale. Follow these step-by-step instructions to create your own unique and cute amigurumi:

Step 1: Body

Row 1: Create a magic ring and 6 single crochet (sc) stitches into it. (6 stitches)
Row 2: Increase by making 2 sc in each stitch. (12 stitches)
Rows 3-6: Sc in each stitch. (12 stitches)
Row 7: Decrease by making 2 sc together. (6 stitches)
Rows 8-9: Sc in each stitch. (6 stitches)
Row 10: Increase in each stitch. (12 stitches)
Row 11: Sc in each stitch. (12 stitches)
Rows 12-14: Repeat rows 10 and 11. (18 stitches)
Rows 15-17: Sc in each stitch. (18 stitches)
Row 18: Decrease by making 2 sc together. (9 stitches)
Rows 19-20: Sc in each stitch. (9 stitches)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Step 2: Fin

With light blue yarn:
Row 1: Create a magic ring and 6 sc stitches into it. (6 stitches)
Rows 2-4: Sc in each stitch. (6 stitches)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Sew the fin onto the back of the whale body.

Step 3: Tail

With light blue yarn:
Row 1: Create a magic ring and 4 sc stitches into it. (4 stitches)
Rows 2-4: Sc in each stitch. (4 stitches)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Sew the tail onto the bottom of the whale body.

Step 4: Eyes

Attach safety eyes or sew black beads onto the whale's face. You can position them however you like to give your amigurumi its own unique expression. If you prefer, you can also embroider the eyes using black yarn.

Step 5: Mouth

Using white yarn, sew a small smiling mouth onto the whale's face. This will give your amigurumi a friendly and cute look.

Step 6: Filling and Assembly

Stuff the whale body firmly with stuffing material. Make sure to stuff the tail and fin as well to give them shape. Once you're satisfied with the stuffing, sew the opening closed using the long tail left at the end of the body row.

Step 7: The Final Touches

Take a step back and admire your creation! If you'd like, you can add some decorative touches to your whale amigurumi. Consider attaching a ribbon or bow to its tail, or even crocheting a small hat or scarf to give your amigurumi some extra personality.

I know I am not beautiful, but I just need some love!

If you want to purchase this pattern let me tell you in advance that it will be HORRIBLE!
You will have to remember the abbreviations, understand the stitches and techniques needed, read and follow the step by step directions and at the same time looking at the pictures for help, and if there is something unclear or have any question about the pattern you will need to contact me. However, the ones of you who finishes the pattern, will have gained a valuable experience (maybe learned some new stitches or techniques) and end up with a very lovable whale that will be a great gift and a new friend that will love any child.
