The Rise of Wellington: A Masterful Commander Emerges

Sir Arthur Wellesley, later known as the Duke of Wellington, was a remarkable figure in military history. Born in Dublin in 1769, he entered the British Army at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks due to his exceptional skills and strategic genius. The Battle of Waterloo: A Pivotal Moment in History

The year was 1815, and Napoleon had escaped from exile on the island of Elba, intent on reclaiming his position as Emperor of France. European powers quickly rallied against him, forming the Seventh Coalition. Wellington found himself at the heart of this coalition, tasked with leading the British, Dutch, Belgian, and German forces in opposing Napoleon's advance.

On June 18, 1815, the Battle of Waterloo commenced. Wellington's troops, positioned strategically on a ridge near the village of Waterloo, faced a relentless onslaught from Napoleon's veteran soldiers. Despite the odds stacked against them, Wellington's forces fought bravely, holding their ground with unwavering determination.

The battle raged on throughout the day, each side delivering crushing blows in an attempt to gain the upper hand. Wellington skillfully employed a combination of defensive tactics and counterattacks, relying on his seasoned troops and carefully positioned artillery. Ultimately, it was a combination of discipline, resilience, and superior strategy that led to Wellington's victory.

Surviving Against All Odds: Tales from the Front Lines

While Wellington ultimately emerged victorious at Waterloo, the battle was not without its sacrifices. Throughout the day, soldiers from both sides exhibited immense bravery and faced unimaginable horrors. In this section, we will explore the personal stories of some of the soldiers who fought under Wellington's command, shedding light on the human experiences amidst the chaos of war.

One such tale is that of Private James McDonnell, a Scottish Highlander who found himself in the midst of the desperate fight against Napoleon's forces. Despite being severely wounded early in the battle, McDonnell refused to leave the front lines. With unwavering determination, he continued to fight until he collapsed from exhaustion, earning him the admiration of his fellow soldiers.

Another remarkable story is that of Captain Georg von Baring, a Prussian officer who played a crucial role in reinforcing Wellington's troops late in the day. Leading his men with unparalleled valor, Captain Baring's timely arrival provided the much-needed support that helped tip the scales in Wellington's favor.

A Legacy That Endures

The Battle of Waterloo marked a turning point in European history, putting an end to Napoleon's aspirations and shaping the geopolitical landscape for years to come. Wellington's masterful command and the heroism of the soldiers who fought under him have left an indelible mark on military history.

As we reflect on the events of that fateful day, we are reminded of the extraordinary courage and sacrifice displayed by these men. Their indomitable spirit serves as a testament to the human capacity for bravery and resilience in the face of adversity.

G.A. Henty had a knack for condensing the complex issues of a war into a single book, but even he realized that the scope of the Peninsular War was so extensive, that a single book would not do it justice. Therefore, it is only natural that Henty's two books on the subject, With Moore at Corunna & Under Wellington's Command, be combined into a single volume. The Peninsular War was one of the more colorful and involved wars ever fought, filled with many battles, sieges, colorful characters, and back-and-forth action. The French invaded Spain and then set their sights on Portugal. Responding to the provocation, the British sent Sir John Moore to thwart Napoleon's ambitions. Experience the Peninsular War by following the exploits of a fictional young Irishman, Terrence O'Connor, as he rises to the rank of Colonel while leading a Portuguese unit attached to the British army. This tale is a wonderful mix of adventure and history that makes excellent reading for older children and adults. Included in this edition are geographical, historical, and explanatory footnotes which will help the modern reader to savor this G.A. Henty classic.
