When it comes to Impressionism, one name stands out among the rest - Mary Cassatt. With an impressive collection of 150 paintings, Cassatt's contribution to the art movement is truly unparalleled. Her unique style and ability to capture the essence of everyday life make her a true master of Impressionism.

The Birth of an Artist

Mary Cassatt was born on May 22, 1844, in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. From an early age, she showed a keen interest in art and was encouraged by her family to pursue her passion. Cassatt's talent quickly emerged, and she began her formal art education at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. However, she felt that her artistic growth was limited in the United States and decided to travel to Europe to further her studies.

Paris: The Epicenter of Impressionism

In 1866, Cassatt arrived in Paris, the heart of the Impressionist movement. The city's vibrant art scene provided the perfect environment for her to flourish as an artist. Cassatt's unique perspective and impressionistic style quickly caught the attention of art enthusiasts and critics alike.

One of the remarkable aspects of Cassatt's work is her focus on the intimate moments of everyday life. Her paintings often depict women and children engaged in mundane tasks, such as reading, sewing, or simply enjoying each other's company. This emphasis on domesticity and femininity sets Cassatt apart from her male counterparts in the Impressionist movement.

An Unlikely Friendship: Cassatt and Degas

In Paris, Cassatt developed a close friendship with fellow Impressionist painter Edgar Degas. The two artists shared a mutual admiration for each other's work and frequently collaborated. Degas' influence is evident in Cassatt's later works, particularly in her use of pastels and her interest in capturing the fleeting moments of modern life.

Cassatt's signature style often includes bold brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and a strong sense of movement. Her ability to capture the essence of a moment in time is truly remarkable.

An Unconventional Woman

In addition to her groundbreaking artistic achievements, Cassatt was also known for her independence and strong personality. She defied societal norms and refused to adhere to the traditional role of women in the 19th century. Cassatt never married and, instead, dedicated her life to her art.

A Lasting Legacy

Mary Cassatt's impact on the art world cannot be overstated. Her contributions to Impressionism and her unique perspective continue to inspire artists to this day. Cassatt's paintings can be found in prestigious museums and private collections worldwide, solidifying her place as one of the most influential artists of her time.

Whether it's her ability to capture the beauty of everyday life or her bold brushstrokes that bring her subjects to life, Mary Cassatt's 150 Impressionist paintings leave an indelible mark on the art world. Her legacy as the queen of Impressionism is a testament to her talent, determination, and unwavering commitment to her craft.

As we delve into Mary Cassatt's remarkable collection of 150 Impressionist paintings, we are transported to a world of everyday beauty and emotion. Her ability to bring life to her subjects and evoke emotions through her art is truly awe-inspiring. Mary Cassatt's place in the pantheon of great Impressionist painters is well-deserved, and her work will continue to inspire generations of artists to come.

Mary Cassatt was an American painter and print-maker. Known to this day as the “painter of mothers and children,” a title given in her lifetime. Born into a fairly wealthy conventional American family in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania., she had the opportunity to grow up in an environment that nurtured travel as part of her education. Cassatt spent five years in Europe and visited many countries, including Paris, London and Berlin. Her exposure to many different artists prompted her to study painting and music. Even though her family objected to her becoming a professional artist, Mary at the age of 15, began studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. After she left the academy, she again traveled to Paris and studied with masters from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
Cassatt had a long and distinguished career and is the only American to exhibit with the Impressionists in Paris.
