Exploring the Track

The Lake Waikaremoana Track encircles the lake over a distance of approximately 46 kilometers. The trail is divided into sections, allowing you to plan your journey according to your preferences and fitness level. Each section offers unique scenery, indigenous flora and fauna, and opportunities to immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature.

One of the highlights is the Panekire Bluff, a strenuous but rewarding side trip on the track. As you conquer the steep ascent, a breathtaking panoramic view of the lake rewards your efforts. The tranquility and solitude at the summit provide a perfect opportunity for reflection and capturing stunning photographs.

As you pedal further, your senses awaken to the melodic sounds of native birds chirping and the gentle rustling of leaves in the wind. The occasional encounters with native wildlife, such as the endangered kiwi, add an element of surprise and excitement to your journey.

Capturing the Beauty

Amidst the captivating beauty of Lake Waikaremoana, every turn offers a photo opportunity waiting to be captured. From stunning sunrises and sunsets reflecting on the calm waters to the majestic waterfalls cascading down the cliffs, the landscape serves as a photographer's paradise.

With your camera in hand, you capture the vibrant native flora, including the vibrant red, orange, and pink hues of the rata and kauri trees. These ancient trees, adorned with epiphytes and moss, provide an ethereal backdrop for your photographs.

The mornings offer a tranquil ambiance with mist floating above the lake, creating an aura of mystery. As the day progresses, the sunlight pierces through the dense foliage, illuminating the forest in shades of green and casting playful shadows on the ground.

Immersing in Maori Culture

The Te Urewera region holds significant cultural and historical importance for the indigenous Maori people. Along the Lake Waikaremoana Track, you have the opportunity to learn about the local Maori culture and their spiritual connection to the land.

The Tuhoe people, the tangata whenua (people of the land), have inhabited the area for centuries. As you pass through marae (meeting grounds) and learn the stories of the land from knowledgeable guides, you gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the cultural heritage of New Zealand.

Celebrating Success

After days of biking, connecting with nature, and immersing in Maori culture, you reach the end of the Lake Waikaremoana Track. A sense of accomplishment and fulfillment washes over you as you reflect on the incredible journey you undertook.

As you bid farewell to Lake Waikaremoana, you carry unforgettable memories captured in your photographs and a renewed sense of connection with nature. The beauty and tranquility of this hidden gem in New Zealand will forever hold a special place in your heart.

The Lake Waikaremoana Track offers a unique biking adventure that combines natural beauty, indigenous culture, and the thrill of outdoor exploration. It is a journey that allows you to engage with New Zealand's pristine wilderness and capture stunning photographs along the way.

So, pack your camera, lace up your biking shoes, and embark on the unforgettable experience of biking Lake Waikaremoana. Prepare to be awe-inspired by the picturesque landscapes, discover the rich Maori heritage, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Come join me for this 50-image photo journal as I cycle and hike across New Zealand. In this seventh volume I'll be cycling south along the coast from Gisborne up into the mountains to soak at the Morere Hot Springs. Next I'll be pedaling inland up to the legendary Lake Waikaremoana with its huge climbs, pouring rains, and 120-foot waterfalls. Finally, I'll be riding through Murupara to the Waikite Thermal Pools for New Years Eve. I hope you enjoy these images and travel thoughts as much as I did photographing them and living the adventure.
