Founded in 1952, the West Australian Ballet Company has been a pillar of the Australian arts and culture scene for over six decades. This esteemed ballet company has not only showcased the sheer talent and artistry of its dancers but has also played a significant role in shaping the landscape of ballet in Western Australia.

When the company was established, it had a clear mission: to bring the world of ballet to the people of Western Australia. It aimed to inspire, educate, and entertain audiences through the power of dance. With a small but dedicated team of dancers, choreographers, and administrators, the West Australian Ballet Company embarked on its journey in 1953.

During its first 21 years, from 1953 to 1973, the West Australian Ballet Company experienced numerous milestones and challenges. The company had to overcome financial struggles, limited resources, and the immense pressure of building a reputation in a relatively young ballet community.

Despite these obstacles, the company persevered and continued to push the boundaries of ballet in Western Australia. It staged captivating performances, captivating audiences with their technical skill and emotional depth. The West Australian Ballet Company quickly became known for its innovative choreography, beautifully designed costumes, and unique interpretations of classic ballets.

One of the defining moments in the early years of the company was the appointment of Kira Bousloff as the first artistic director in 1959. Bousloff, a renowned Soviet dancer and choreographer, brought a new level of expertise and discipline to the company. Under her guidance, the West Australian Ballet Company flourished, gaining recognition both nationally and internationally.

Throughout the first 21 years, the West Australian Ballet Company performed a diverse repertoire, showcasing a range of ballet styles and techniques. From classical ballets such as Swan Lake and Giselle to avant-garde contemporary works, the company constantly pushed the boundaries of what was possible in the world of ballet.

One of the most notable achievements of the West Australian Ballet Company during this period was its first international tour in 1962. The company represented Australia in the Edinburgh Festival, where they received critical acclaim for their performances. This tour marked a pivotal moment in the company's history, solidifying its position as a world-class ballet company.

Moreover, the West Australian Ballet Company also played a crucial role in nurturing local talent and fostering a sense of community within the ballet industry. It provided opportunities for aspiring dancers to train and perform with professional artists, creating a supportive environment for growth and development.

As the West Australian Ballet Company celebrated its 21st anniversary in 1973, it had firmly established itself as a cultural institution in Western Australia. Through dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to the art of ballet, the company had achieved significant milestones and laid a strong foundation for future generations of dancers and ballet enthusiasts.

The first 21 years of the West Australian Ballet Company shaped the company's identity and set the stage for its continued success. Despite the challenges faced along the way, the company persisted in its mission to bring the beauty of ballet to the people of Western Australia. It was during these formative years that the seeds of creativity, innovation, and excellence were sown, propelling the West Australian Ballet Company towards its position as a leading ballet company in Australia.

Today, the West Australian Ballet Company continues to captivate audiences with its stunning performances and dedication to artistic excellence. As it enters its seventh decade, the company stands as a testament to the power of dance and the enduring impact of the arts on our society.

Kira’s Legacy the story of the origins of the West Australian Ballet is a remarkable story of success against tremendous odds. Kira Bousloff, founder, and her immediate successor, Rex Reid, were ballet professionals. Even so, the task of delivering a ballet performance to widely spread communities was not an easy one.
It was due to the choreography and teaching of Mde Bousloff that the Company kept moving along as an amateur organization for seventeen years. The high degree of endeavour and the enthusiasm she imparted in dancers created success. In the following four years, the expertise and artistry of Reid brought the Company into a professional existence.
Today, after sixty years of performance, it is seen as the foremost provincial Australian Company
