Rise to Stardom

Flynn was born on June 20, 1909, in Hobart, Tasmania. He was a restless soul, always seeking adventure and excitement. His journey to fame began when he left Australia for England, hoping to find success as an actor. It was during a performance at the Northampton Repertory Theatre that Flynn caught the attention of film producers, who saw his incredible potential.

His breakthrough role came in 1935 when he starred as Fletcher Christian in the film "Mutiny on the Bounty." Flynn's natural talent and undeniable charisma captivated audiences, launching him into stardom virtually overnight. From that moment on, he became a Hollywood legend.

The Scandals and Controversies

Behind the scenes, Flynn's life was anything but ordinary. He was infamous for his tumultuous personal life, marked by scandalous affairs, drug and alcohol abuse, and legal troubles. His relationships with some of the most beautiful women of his time, such as Olivia de Havilland and Lili Damita, kept the tabloids buzzing.

However, the most significant controversy surrounded Flynn's alleged involvement in a statutory rape case in 1942. Accused of having a sexual relationship with underage actress Beverly Aadland, Flynn's reputation suffered a severe blow. Although he was acquitted, the scandal tarnished his image, leading to a decline in his career.

Flynn's Filmography

Despite the scandals, Flynn's talent shone on the silver screen. He starred in many iconic films, leaving an indelible mark on the world of cinema. Some of his most notable works include:

  • "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938)
  • "Captain Blood" (1935)
  • "Gentleman Jim" (1942)
  • "They Died with Their Boots On" (1941)
  • "Dodge City" (1939)
  • "The Sea Hawk" (1940)
  • "Objective, Burma!" (1945)

Throughout his career, he displayed his versatility as an actor, effortlessly transitioning from swashbuckling roles to more dramatic characters. His portrayal of Robin Hood in "The Adventures of Robin Hood" remains one of his most iconic performances.

Unfortunately, Flynn's passionate and adventurous life took a toll on his health. He passed away on October 14, 1959, at the age of 50. However, his extraordinary legacy still reverberates through the world of cinema, and he continues to be remembered as one of the Hollywood legends.

The Enduring Appeal of Flynn

A One-Person Play About the Life and Times of Errol Flynn. [Acting Edition]

As Captain Blood, Robin Hood and the Sea Hawk, he was the "King of the Swashbucklers". As Errol Flynn, he was Hollywood's number one rogue. He was married three times, and also was the defendant in three rape trials. Indeed, it's fitting that his last major swashbuckling film cast him in the role of Don Juan. The play joins Flynn a few weeks before his premature death. Knowing that the end is near, he is in a New York airport, waiting to fly west to see his children for the last time. Reminiscing about his life, he talks about his mischievous youth in Tasmania, the mother who always berated him as a "wicked, wicked boy," his days as a New Guinea slave trader, and his Hollywood adventures with the likes of John Barrymore, Jack Warner, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland and director Michael Curtiz. Amusing, yet tragic, Michael B. Druxman's FLYNN is the saga of the screen's most lovable rascal.
