One of the highlights of this trip is undoubtedly the iconic Horizontal Falls. Experience the thrill of riding the tidal flows through a narrow gorge and witness the power of nature up close. The Kimberleys is also home to some of Australia's most pristine beaches, such as Cable Beach in Broome. Sink your toes into the soft white sand and watch the mesmerizing sunset over the turquoise waters.

Encountering the Wildlife

The Kimberleys is a haven for unique wildlife species. Keep your eyes peeled as you drive through this wilderness, as you might spot crocodiles basking in the sun along the riverbanks or kangaroos hopping across the open plains. Take a cruise along the Ord River to encounter a diversity of bird species, from elegant herons to colorful kingfishers. You may even be lucky enough to witness the iconic osprey snatching a fish from the water.

Immersing in Aboriginal Culture

The Kimberleys holds deep cultural significance for the traditional owners of the land, the Aboriginal people. Take the time to learn about their ancient beliefs, customs, and Dreamtime stories as you visit various Aboriginal rock art sites. Gain a deeper understanding of their connection to the land and their rich history that dates back tens of thousands of years.

Tips for a Memorable Journey

Before setting off on your Darwin to Perth adventure, make sure to plan your trip carefully. Here are a few essential tips to ensure your journey is smooth and enjoyable:

  1. Research and plan your route: The Kimberleys is vast, and there are countless attractions to explore. Make a list of must-visit places and plan your route accordingly.
  2. Carry sufficient supplies: The Kimberleys is remote, and you may not come across many stores or fuel stations. Stock up on food, water, and fuel to avoid any inconveniences during your trip.
  3. Prepare for the weather: The Kimberleys can get scorching hot during the day and surprisingly cold during the night. Pack clothing suitable for all weather conditions to stay comfortable throughout your journey.
  4. Respect the environment: The Kimberleys is a fragile ecosystem, so it is crucial to leave no trace. Take your rubbish with you and abide by any environmental guidelines.
  5. Engage with the local communities: Interact with the locals and learn about their way of life. They often possess valuable knowledge about the region and can enhance your journey with their insights.

This book is the first of a series of trips Nancy and I have made in Australia. We don't live here but we visit often to see our Son and his family who do live here. They have lived both in Perth, Coomera, and Gladstone.

The other trips are from Melbourne, then South vis the Great Ocean Hiway, then North to Coomera via the Newall Hiway which takes you through the interior of south eastern Australia.

Another trip is by Motor Home from Darwin straight South to Adelaide with adjustments to Uluru, Alice Springs, Coober Petty, the Flanders, the Barraossa Valley, and other interesting spots.

An additional trip from Coomera to Sydney vis the coastal highway and side trips into the eastern mountains along the way.

Lastly, a short jaunt from Coomera to Longreach via Rockhampton.

Not Everyone Travels the same. This is how we like to travel and get most out of it. What is contained in this book is not a tour guide nor a "How TO'. It is a record of an experience we wanted to try, enjoyed it, and want to share .
