Picture yourself standing at the edge of a majestic mountain, surrounded by lush green landscapes and archaeological ruins dating back to the 15th century. This is the enthralling experience that awaits you at the captivating wonder of Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the seven new wonders of the world.

Located high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Machu Picchu offers travelers a unique blend of cultural significance, breathtaking natural beauty, and a deep sense of history. It is a destination that continues to captivate the hearts and minds of adventurers from around the globe.

Uncovering the Historical Significance

Machu Picchu was built during the height of the Inca Empire in the 15th century, but was abandoned and remained hidden from the modern world until its rediscovery in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham. The city was believed to have been a sacred place, serving as a prominent center for religious ceremonies and as a retreat for Inca rulers.

The intricate architecture and advanced engineering techniques used in the construction of Machu Picchu reflect the remarkable ingenuity of the Inca civilization. The stone walls, perfectly fitted together without mortar, have withstood the test of time and remain a testament to the ancient civilization's mastery of construction.

Getting to Machu Picchu

Reaching Machu Picchu is an adventure in itself. Most travelers begin their journey in the vibrant city of Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire. From Cusco, there are several options to reach the site, including the classic Inca Trail trek or the alternative routes of Salkantay or Lares.

It is essential to plan your trip well in advance, as visiting Machu Picchu requires a permit and the number of daily visitors is limited to preserve the site's integrity. Booking your entrance ticket and arranging transportation should be done with a reputable tour operator or through the official government website.

Exploring the Ruins

Upon arriving at Machu Picchu, visitors are greeted with awe-inspiring panoramic views and an overwhelming sense of wonder. The site is divided into two main areas: the urban sector and the agricultural sector.

The urban sector contains impressive stone structures, including the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana (a ritual stone used as a solar clock), and the Royal Tomb. It is here where you can truly appreciate the architectural ingenuity of the Incas.

The agricultural sector, which includes expansive terraces and irrigation channels, showcases the Inca's advanced agricultural methods. These terraces were used to grow a variety of crops, making Machu Picchu self-sufficient during its time.

Guided Tours and Alternative Treks

While exploring Machu Picchu at your own pace is a remarkable experience, guided tours provide valuable insights into the history and significance of the site. Knowledgeable guides can shed light on the mysteries of Machu Picchu and share fascinating stories about the Inca civilization.

For those looking for a more adventurous trek, the Inca Trail is a popular choice. This four-day hike takes you through stunning landscapes, including cloud forests, mountain passes, and ancient Inca ruins. However, due to its popularity, permits for the Inca Trail must be secured well in advance.

Alternatively, the Salkantay Trek and the Lares Trek offer breathtaking alternatives to the Inca Trail, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural wonders of the Andes while still reaching the magnificent destination of Machu Picchu.

Preserving Machu Picchu for Future Generations

As a traveler visiting Machu Picchu, it is crucial to respect and preserve the site for future generations. Stick to designated paths, avoid touching or climbing on the ruins, and follow the guidance of the local guides. By being responsible travelers, we can ensure that this awe-inspiring wonder continues to inspire and amaze for centuries to come.

Visiting Machu Picchu is an unforgettable experience that offers an unparalleled glimpse into the splendor of ancient civilization. From its rich history to its stunning natural surroundings, this World Wonder has everything to offer for travelers seeking adventure, culture, and an appreciation for the wonders of the past. Machu Picchu is a place, very few people have heard of. It was not until 1911 that people became aware of it. This is a magical city right up there in the clouds. Interested yet? Let us learn more about this amazing place called Machu Picchu. About the people who built it, about the period when it was built, how it was built, how was this amazing place like and who discovered it.

A professor from Yale Hiram Bingham used to explore the less travelled and used to look out for hidden places. He was looking everywhere for Vilcabamba but nobody knew about it. Then he met with someone called Arteaga and Bingham asked him about the presence of any nearby ruins. Arteaga informed him about ruins on the top of the mountains named Machu Picchu but was reluctant to take him there because of presence of snakes. Bingham tried to offer him money and ultimately Arteaga agreed. They started the journey to the top of the mountain. They found a boy and Bingham asked him if there were any ruins. They went on and found some Inca stones and they stumbled upon a majestic stone staircase. Upon climbing the top of the staircase, they found a stone temple and got mesmerized by the beauty of the place.

They found another temple which was as enthralling. Bingham had a black box camera and he wanted to take some pictures, the 1st picture being that of the boy. Then he saw some vines in a distance and Bingham thought that it must be Vilcabamba. However, he removed the vines and understood that didn’t discover Vilcabamba, fortune has been kind enough to lead him to a place that is even more wonderful. He had discovered Machu Picchu.

The Machu Picchu was built by the Incas, around 1430. It was a small city but was built way on the top of the Andes mountain range. It was built at a remote place and was built between two peaks of the mighty Andes and at a height of 8,000 feet above the sea level. Known as the land of Gods- Machu Picchu was quite an organized society with all the services- military, financial, tax, goods etc. With over 150 structures including homes, palaces and temples. No doubt that Machu Picchu is “the city in the clouds.”
