Chapter 1: The Unbreakable Bond

In the midst of World War II, in the year 1944, fate brought together two souls at a U.S. Army Air Force base in England. Tucky Jo, a young and spirited American soldier, met Little Heart, an adorable stray dog with a heart full of loyalty.

Despite the chaos and uncertainty of war, Tucky Jo and Little Heart formed an unbreakable bond that transcended their differences. In the darkest hours, their friendship became a beacon of hope and a source of comfort amidst the turmoil that surrounded them.

Chapter 2: A Suppressed Hero Emerges

As the war raged on, Tucky Jo's squadron was deployed to Normandy, France, as part of the Allied forces' mission to liberate Europe from the clutches of Nazi Germany. With unwavering determination, Tucky Jo embarked on a treacherous and harrowing journey, with Little Heart faithfully by his side.

Little did they know that their unparalleled courage and resourcefulness would soon be put to the ultimate test.

Chapter 3: The Battle of Bastogne

On a bitterly cold day in December 1944, Tucky Jo and Little Heart found themselves in the midst of the Battle of Bastogne, one of the most critical engagements of the war, where the odds seemed insurmountable.

Surrounded by enemy forces and facing severe shortages of supplies, ammunition, and food, Tucky Jo and his fellow soldiers were pushed to the brink of exhaustion. Through these dire circumstances, Little Heart's unwavering loyalty and resilience lifted their spirits, providing comfort and reminding them of the strength within.

Chapter 4: The Hero's Sacrifice

As Tucky Jo and his comrades fought valiantly against all odds, tragedy struck. During a fierce firefight, Tucky Jo sustained a life-threatening injury that left him unable to move. Sensing the imminent danger, Little Heart sprung into action, alerting nearby troops and guiding them to her wounded companion.

Little Heart's act of heroism saved Tucky Jo's life, but it came at an enormous cost. In the chaos of battle, Little Heart was fatally wounded, leaving the soldiers heartbroken over the loss of their courageous comrade.

Chapter 5: United Forever

Though Tucky Jo never forgot the sacrifice made by his loyal friend, life moved on after the war. In the years that followed, Tucky Jo became a prominent figure, sharing the incredible story of his bond with Little Heart, ensuring that her memory lived on.

Tucky Jo's unwavering dedication to preserving Little Heart's legacy resulted in the establishment of a memorial in her honor, where the two reunited souls were immortalized in a bronze sculpture, forever united in a moment frozen in time.

Friendship, loyalty, and kindness stand the test of time in this heartwarming World War II–era picture book based on a true story from the beloved author-illustrator of Pink and Say and The Keeping Quilt.

Tucky Jo was known as the “kid from Kentucky” when he enlisted in the army at age fifteen. Being the youngest recruit in the Pacific during World War II was tough. But he finds a friend in a little girl who helps him soothe his bug bites, and he gets to know her family and gives them some of his rations. Although the little girl doesn’t speak English, Tucky Jo and Little Heart share the language of kindness. Many years later, Tucky Jo and Little Heart meet again, and an act of kindness is returned when it’s needed the most in this touching picture book based on a true story.
