In May 1967, Jerry Woods agreed to drive his two cousins, Danny and Martin, along with two of Martin's friends, to Lisbon. Every Celtic supporter will know why they wanted to be in Portugal's capital on that particular date. Jerry was the only driver among them and his car was about ten years old, so they were taking a huge chance. They were all up for it, though, and, on the 21st of May, they set off from Fife. They had to travel through half of Scotland and the whole of England to get to the continent. Even then, they still had three countries to traverse: France, Spain and Portugal. It was an endurance test for Jerry as much as anything else. With little money, they had to sleep rough and often had to forgo luxuries like food. Remarkably, they made it to Lisbon in one piece and in plenty of time to see the Lisbon Lions make history. The only trouble was that they were going to have to do the whole journey again to get back home! This is the, often hilarious, story of their adventures and misadventures as they made their way across four countries and back again. It is a tale involving flags, monks, policemen, pimps and assorted strangers. Jerry certainly earned the right to say, 'I was there!'
