In times of crisis, whether it be social, political, or natural, theatre has played a profound role in providing solace, sparking conversation, and instilling hope. This article dives deep into the transformative power of theatre during moments of crisis and explores how it has been an anchor for humanity throughout history.

Theatre as an Emotional Outlet

In times of crisis, emotions run high, and people are overwhelmed with fear, anger, and sadness. Historical Examples of Theatre in Crisis

Throughout history, theatre has served as a powerful tool to navigate through hardship. From Shakespearean plays staged during times of war to dramatic performances challenging political regimes, theatre has given people a voice when it was suppressed in other arenas. It has reminded individuals of their strength, resilience, and capacity for change.

Shakespearean Theatre During Times of War

In the midst of war, William Shakespeare's plays offered a temporary escape from reality while addressing the harsh realities of the time. Theaters became a place where people could gather, forget their troubles, and be transported to a world of imagination and fantasy. Plays like "Henry V" reminded audiences of the bravery and nobility of the human spirit and inspired them to persevere.

Theatre as a Catalyst for Change

In times of political crisis, theatre has often acted as a catalyst for change. Artists have used their craft to challenge oppressive regimes, shed light on social injustices, and unite communities in the pursuit of a better future. Plays like Bertolt Brecht's "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui" and August Wilson's "Fences" served as powerful critiques of authoritarianism and racism, respectively, sparking conversations and mobilizing audiences for social change.

Theatre as a Catalyst for Healing

In times of crisis, healing is crucial for individuals and communities to rebuild. Theatre serves as a powerful vehicle for healing, allowing people to process their emotions, find closure, and move forward. Through storytelling, performances, and communal experiences, theatre provides an environment where people can come together, support one another, and start the healing journey.

The Role of Theatre in Times of Crisis Today

In the face of the current global crisis, theatre has once again proven its resilience and adaptability. Although physical performances may be limited, virtual platforms have emerged as spaces for artists and audiences to connect. Online plays, live-streamed performances, and creative digital adaptations have helped theatres to continue their mission of inspiring, educating, and igniting conversations even in the most challenging times.

Theatre's Legacy: Inspiring Hope and Resilience

As we navigate through moments of crisis, theatre remains a testament to the human spirit and its ability to overcome adversity. Its legacy of inspiring hope, provoking thought, and fostering empathy is timeless. Theatre serves as a reminder that even in the darkest times, art has the power to heal, unite, and transform societies.

Theatre in times of crisis has proven to be a vital force that transcends boundaries and cultivates understanding. Its ability to provide emotional release, challenge authority, promote healing, and inspire change makes it an indispensable form of art. In a world consumed by uncertainty, theatre offers a glimpse of light and an opportunity for growth. Let us value, support, and engage in this powerful medium, for it has the potential to shape our collective future.

Theatre has a complex history of responding to crises, long before they happen. Through stage plays, contemporary challenges can be presented, explored and even foreshadowed in ways that help audiences understand the world around them. Since the theatre of the Greeks, audiences have turned to live theatre in order to find answers in uncertain political, social and economic times, and through this unique collection questions about

This anthology brings together a collection of 20 scenes from 20 playwrights that each respond to the world in crisis. Twenty of the world's most prolific playwrights were asked to select one scene from across their published work that speaks to the current world situation in 2020.

As COVID-19 continues to challenge every aspect of global life, contemporary theatre has long predicted a world on the edge. Through these 20 scenes from plays spanning from 1980 to 2020, we see how theatre and art has the capacity to respond, comment on and grapple with global challenges that in turn speak to the current time in which we are living.

Each scene, chosen by the writer, is prefaced by an interview in which they discuss their process, their reason for selection and how their work reflects both the past and the present. From the political plays of Lucy Prebble and James Graham to the polemics of Philip Ridley and Tim Crouch. From bold works by Inua Ellams, Morgan Lloyd Malcom and Tanika Gupta to the social relevance of Hannah Khalil, Zoe Cooper and Simon Stephens this anthology looks at theatre in the present and asks the question: “how can theatre respond to a world in crisis?”

The collection is prefaced by an from Edward Bond, one of contemporary theatre's most prolific dramatists.
