The Wartburg car - a symbol of East Germany's automotive industry - holds a unique place in history. Born amidst the turbulent times of the Cold War, this extraordinary vehicle has fascinated car enthusiasts and historians alike ever since. Today, we embark on a journey to uncover the secrets, triumphs, and challenges behind the Wartburg car and explore how it came to dominate the roads of East Germany.

From Rags to Riches: The Birth of Wartburg

The Wartburg car's story begins in the early 1950s when the newly formed German Democratic Republic (GDR) set out to establish its own automobile manufacturing industry. With a shortage of resources and an economy heavily restrained by Soviet influence, building a car from scratch seemed like an impossible dream. Nevertheless, against all odds, the engineers and designers of the GDR's Eisenach Automobile Works embarked on this ambitious venture.

The Wartburg factory, housed in the picturesque town of Eisenach, distinctive for its imposing medieval castle, was the birthplace of the iconic Wartburg car. The first model, known as the Wartburg 311, rolled off the assembly line in 1956, heralding a new era in East German automotive production.

Engineering Marvels: Unveiling the Wartburg 311

The Wartburg 311 dazzled both customers and critics alike with its innovative features ahead of its time. Powered by a robust and reliable 3-cylinder two-stroke engine - a rarity for that era - this vehicle showcased impressive performance and fuel efficiency, a testimony to the engineering prowess of the GDR. The car boasted a sleek aerodynamic design, unparalleled comfort, and meticulous attention to detail, making it an instant hit in the domestic market.

Despite its undeniable success, the Wartburg 311 represented merely the first step in the journey to establish East Germany as a global player in the automotive industry.

An Era of Prosperity: The Golden Age of the Wartburg Car

Building upon the initial triumph, the Wartburg car underwent continuous development and improvement over the years, solidifying its place as a true automotive masterpiece. The Wartburg 353, introduced in the early 1960s, came equipped with a more powerful engine, enhanced safety features, and a refined design, setting new standards in the industry.

East Germans embraced the Wartburg as a symbol of national pride and economic success. The car was not only affordable but also a reliable companion for everyday life, capturing the hearts and minds of generations. The spacious interiors, advanced heating systems, and the iconic "tail fin" design turned the Wartburg into an automotive legend, cruising the streets of East Germany with unparalleled elegance.

Challenges and Decline: The Fall of an Empire

The end of the 1980s brought with it the winds of change, sweeping across East Germany and propelling the country towards the reunification with West Germany. As borders opened and the economy opened up, the Wartburg car faced stern competition from the more advanced and technologically sophisticated Western car manufacturers.

Despite valiant efforts to modernize and adapt to the changing market dynamics, the Wartburg brand struggled to survive. The final model, the Wartburg 1.3, was launched in 1988, but unfortunately, it failed to capture the imagination of the buyers and mark a turnaround for the brand.

In 1991, the production of Wartburg cars ceased, marking the end of an era in East German automotive history.

The Legacy Lives On: The Wartburg Car Today

While the Wartburg car ceased production over three decades ago, its legacy continues to captivate automotive enthusiasts around the world. Collectors, restorers, and admirers all strive to keep the spirit of the Wartburg alive.

Today, owning a Wartburg car has become a symbol of nostalgia and a tribute to a bygone era. Car rallies, exhibitions, and museums dedicated to the Wartburg brand attract thousands of visitors each year, ensuring that the story of this remarkable vehicle remains etched in our memories.

The Trabant was not the only car from Communist East Germany. The Wartburg was also made there and was a more upmarket, bigger car than its two stroke cousin, the Trabant. Wartburg cars were better funded, better finished and also exported to Western Europe and also to the U.S.A and other parts of the world. The Wartburg was used also by Government employees, Police, state services etc. Wartburg are best known for their 311 and 353 models and their sturdy, if antiquated separate chassis.
This book tells their story from beginning in 1900 to their demise in 1990, covers all models, specifications, with road tests, pictures and lots more. The only definitive account of Wartburg cars ever written in English. Packed full of information. A must for all classic car enthusiasts.
This book is contained in my book "Cars With 2-Stroke Engines" along with other marques such as D.K.W, Trabant, Saab, Subaru, Suzuki, Goliath, Lloyd, Goggomobil, FSO, Barkas & more. Fully revised, edited and a new layout for November 2018.
