One of the major highlights of Bulgaria is its rich history and cultural heritage. The country is home to ancient Thracian ruins, medieval fortresses, and vibrant cities showcasing a harmonious blend of Eastern and Western influences. Sofia, the capital city, boasts a plethora of modern attractions, including museums, art galleries, and a thriving nightlife.

Another reason why Bulgaria stands out as a top travel destination is its affordability. Here, you can experience the best of Europe without breaking the bank. The cost of accommodation, food, and transportation is significantly lower compared to other European countries, making it an attractive choice for budget-conscious adventurers.

Exploring Bulgaria with Big Rucsacs

Now that you're convinced to visit Bulgaria, let's talk about the real adventure - touring the country with your big rucsacs. The size of your rucsac doesn't matter; what matters is the spirit of adventure and the willingness to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations.

Start your journey in Sofia, where you can immerse yourself in the city's vibrant atmosphere and explore its historical and cultural landmarks. From there, make your way to the Rhodope Mountains, known for their mystical beauty and enchanting folklore. Here, you can hike through picturesque trails, visit traditional villages, and discover hidden caves.

A must-visit destination for nature lovers is the Pirin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its rugged landscapes, crystal-clear lakes, and diverse flora and fauna, the park offers countless opportunities for hiking and wildlife spotting. Don't forget to check out the iconic Marble Ridge, a natural formation that resembles a massive bacon strip!

For a taste of Bulgaria's rich cultural heritage, visit the charming town of Plovdiv. Known for its well-preserved Roman amphitheater and colorful old town, Plovdiv will transport you back in time. Don't miss the opportunity to attend a traditional Bulgarian folklore show and indulge in the local cuisine.

Following two rather chaotic month long trips travelling on public transport around Romania. The "Old Couple With Big Rucsacs" decided to take their "No plans, no frills, no idea" to another Eastern European country.

After much pondering over different possible locations they finally settled on Bulgaria. Here a further challenge was offered as it has the Cyrillic alphabet and so they had to get used to reading София instead of Sofia etc. Add to this their total lack of preperation (first glance at the guide book was on the flight over) and you get the idea.

Their resultant route was cobbled together from 'Things you must see in Bulgaria', conversations with locals and their general inquisitiveness. On the way they faced the usual challenges of independant travel in a foreign land as well as; falling in rivers, getting stung by jelly fish, suffering food poisoning and there was even a dislocated ankles.

Throughout it all they kept their sense of humour even when their luggage went missing.
