Boal believed that theatre should not be a passive tool for entertainment but rather an arena for dialogue and social transformation. With this philosophy in mind, he developed a set of techniques and exercises that would empower actors, or "spect-actors," as he called them, to actively engage with their roles and the audience. These techniques include Image Theatre, Forum Theatre, Invisible Theatre, and Legislative Theatre, among others.
Image Theatre: Breaking Barriers Through Tableaux
One of the most commonly used techniques in The Theatre of the Oppressed is Image Theatre. It involves a group of spect-actors creating frozen images, or tableaux, that represent a particular social issue or conflict. By physically embodying these images, the participants not only gain a deeper understanding of the issue but also find ways to challenge it.
For example, a group might create an image portraying a situation where a person is being silenced by society. Through a facilitated discussion, the spect-actors explore the power dynamics at play and brainstorm ways to challenge the oppression depicted in the image. This discussion can then lead to the creation of a Forum Theatre performance.
Forum Theatre: Engaging the Audience in Active Dialogue
Forum Theatre is an integral part of The Theatre of the Oppressed as it allows spect-actors to actively engage with the performance and influence its outcome. This technique involves a short play or scene that presents a conflict or oppressive situation. At a certain point, the play is paused, and the audience is invited to step into the shoes of the characters and propose alternative actions or solutions to the problem at hand.
The facilitator, known as the "joker," encourages the audience to experiment with different possibilities, empowering them to challenge the oppressive structures within the performance. This interactive dialogue not only raises awareness about the existing social inequalities but also encourages spectators to take action in their own lives.
Invisible Theatre: Shattering Illusions and Igniting Conversations
Invisible Theatre is a powerful yet controversial technique used in The Theatre of the Oppressed. Unlike traditional theatre, the spectators are unaware that what they are witnessing is a performance. Actors blend in with the public, portraying real-life situations that challenge societal norms and prejudices. This technique aims to highlight the hidden biases within society and spark conversations among the unsuspecting audience.
For instance, actors may stage a scene where a person is discriminated against based on their gender or race. The reactions of the bystanders form the foundation for a larger dialogue about prejudice and discrimination. Invisible Theatre aims to blur the boundaries between art and reality, pushing the audience to question their own biases and preconceived notions.
Legislative Theatre: Empowering Communities for Change
Boal's final contribution to The Theatre of the Oppressed was Legislative Theatre – a technique that aims to facilitate real-world change through collective action. This approach encourages participants to identify and discuss pressing social issues, propose potential solutions, and envision legislative changes that can address the underlying problems.
Legislative Theatre believes that the power to effect change lies within each individual. By providing a platform for discussions and active participation, this technique empowers communities to collectively voice their concerns and influence decision-making processes. It bridges the gap between artistic expression and political action, facilitating tangible social transformation.

This book looks at Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed and the wider framework in which it operates. The focus is on the semiotic aspect of theatre. There are a number of elements in the theatre that follow codes and conventions. When conceiving theatre as a language these can be subverted in order to make particular statements. Boal’s work draws from Brecht’s Marxist drama and Paulo Freire’s ‘Pedagogy of the Oppressed’. The concept of ‘Dialectics’ is a key term in Brecht’s work. Indeed, Boal conceives oppression as the absence of dialogue. Boal’s aesthetic language developed in Brazil’s military coup environment. At the time the challenge was to provide people with a system of symbols that could pair the written and spoken language. Then, Boal formulated the concept of ‘spect-actor’. Some voices claim that the method has become dogmatic. At the present, Boal is no icon of oppression.
A number of theatre companies specialise in tackling specific social issues that lead to isolation and social apartheid. This is supported by a social policy and funding bodies that seek social cohesion through these kind of schemes.
