Asmund Berserkerbane is better known in the sagas as Gnodar-Asmund, who is mentioned in several other sagas, and whose later life, in which he gained his later epithet, is known mainly from brief references at the end of this saga.

The saga also has connections with the lost saga of Starkad the Old, in that Asmund’s son is said to have been the king whose murder was Starkad’s last shameful deed, and yet that seems to be challenged by the first chapter of The Saga of Hromund Gripsson. These endless and often contradictory links with other sagas and tales are as intricate and fascinating as the saga itself, whose structure seems to owe itself to a knowledge of romance literature from the Continent, which would have been available in Iceland at the time of composition—apparently the fourteenth century, although the earliest extant manuscripts are fifteenth century in date.
