The Start of an Unusual Friendship

Chester, a cricket from Connecticut, accidentally gets trapped in a picnic basket and is transported to the concrete jungle of Times Square. He meets young Mario Bellini, the son of the family who operates a newsstand in the subway station. Mario befriends Chester, and with his little sister, Millie, they create an extraordinary bond that transcends cultural differences.

Mario introduces Chester to his mouse friend, Tucker, and cat friend, Harry, who reside at the newsstand. The trio becomes inseparable, embarking on adventures and discovering the magic that can take place when animals and humans unite in friendship.

A Symphony of Sounds

What makes The Cricket In Times Square such a captivating read is the way Selden beautifully illustrates the harmonious symphony of sounds that Chester creates through chirping his melodious tunes. Chester's music has an unexpected influence on the people of Times Square, uplifting their spirits and bringing joy to their busy lives. The cricket's melodious chirps offer solace and a moment of respite amidst the chaos of urban life.

A Celebration of New York City

Besides the heartwarming friendships formed in this story, Selden masterfully captures the essence of New York City in the 1960s. The sights, sounds, and energy of Times Square are vividly portrayed, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the bustling atmosphere of this iconic location. Selden's attention to detail and love for the city bring the setting to life, making it an additional character in the book.

Lessons in Resourcefulness and Adaptability

Chester's journey in Times Square teaches valuable lessons of resourcefulness and adaptability. As a cricket, he must find innovative ways to survive in an urban environment vastly different from his natural habitat. Through his determination and cleverness, Chester thrives in his new surroundings and inspires readers to embrace challenges and adapt to new and unfamiliar situations.

The Cricket In Times Square has captivated generations of readers with its endearing characters, engaging plot, and timeless themes of friendship and adventure. An updated version of the timeless children's classic featuring a business-savvy mouse, a kind alley cat, and a talented country cricket, featuring a new foreword and revisions by YA author Stacey Lee.

Tucker is a streetwise city mouse. He thought he'd seen it all. But he's never met a cricket before, which really isn't surprising, because, along with his friend Harry Cat, Tucker lives in the very heart of New York City—the Times Square subway station.

Chester Cricket never intended to leave his Connecticut meadow. He'd be there still if he hadn't followed the entrancing aroma of liverwurst right into someone's picnic basket. Now, like any tourist in the city, he wants to look around. And he could not have found two better guides—and friends—than Tucker and Harry. The trio have many adventures—from taking in the sights and sounds of Broadway to escaping a smoky fire.

Chester makes a third friend, too. It is a boy, Mario, who rescues Chester from a dusty corner of the subway station and brings him to live in the safety of his parents' newsstand. He hopes at first to keep Chester as a pet, but Mario soon understands that the cricket is more than that. Because Chester has a hidden talent and no one—not even Chester himself—realizes that the little country cricket may just be able to teach even the toughest New Yorkers a thing or two.

The Cricket in Times Square is George Selden at his best, and the new illustrations and interior images by Garth Williams make this edition a special treat.
