- Dissection kit: Comprising scissors, forceps, scalpels, and pins
- Powdered borax: Used as a desiccant to remove moisture, preventing decay
- Formaldehyde solution: A strong preservative that halts decay
- Cotton or wooden dowels: Used to support the limbs during the drying process
- Wire: Helps in reinforcing the structure
- Wood block or foam: Provides a base for mounting the bird
- Paint and brushes: For coloration and adding intricate details
The Step-by-Step Process
1. Skin Removal
Begin by skinning the woodcock delicately, ensuring minimal cuts or tears. Take extra care around the wings and legs, as these areas are more prone to damage. Use the dissection kit to carefully separate the skin from the body, taking note of any unique features or characteristics that should be preserved.
2. Internal Cleaning
After the skin has been successfully removed, proceed to clean the carcass thoroughly. Use a mixture of water and mild detergent to remove any remaining blood or debris. Pay attention to hard-to-reach areas, such as the neck and under the wings. Rinse the carcass with clean water, ensuring all soap residue is removed.
3. Preserving the Bird
Once the internal cleaning is complete, it's time to preserve the woodcock and prevent decay. Fill the body cavity with a formaldehyde solution, ensuring it reaches all areas. Carefully inject the solution into the wings and legs to preserve their shape and structure. Use pins to secure the skin, smoothing out any wrinkles or folds. Finally, apply powdered borax liberally to absorb moisture.
4. Drying and Mounting
Hang the preserved woodcock by its neck or attach it to a wooden dowel. Allow it to air dry in a cool and dry room for several days, ensuring there is good airflow. Position the wings and legs using cotton or wooden dowels to maintain their natural shape and posture. This step is crucial in achieving a lifelike taxidermy piece.
5. Adding the Final Touches
Once the woodcock has thoroughly dried, it's time to add the finishing touches. Using high-quality paint and brushes, carefully and precisely color the bird's exposed areas, paying attention to its distinct patterns and markings. Apply multiple layers of paint to achieve depth and realism. Don't forget to capture the sparkle in its eyes!
The art of woodcock taxidermy requires patience, precision, and passion. By meticulously following the steps outlined in this guide, you can successfully embark on preserving the beauty of woodcocks for generations to come. Remember, practice makes perfect, so take your time and keep refining your skills. Happy embalming!

This book was created with the aim of directing hunting lovers and young people today to approach the wonderful world of nature.
Through it and the updates that I will publish later, I will try to better describe an art, not unknown: taxidermy.
To make it easier for everyone to gradually approach this art, I have divided this work into several books that I will publish periodically.
These first concepts therefore have the purpose of bringing as many people as possible to nature, no matter what means .... Nature itself will know how to be loved as it deserves and for what it is worth.
N.B. This book, in addition to the written part, contains seventy minutes of movies distributed in twenty-two films.
