When we think of ancient Rome, we are struck by its grandeur, its power, and the legacy it left behind. But behind every great empire, there is an intriguing story of its beginnings. One such story is that of Romulus, the legendary founder of Rome, immortalized in history and mythology.

The Birth of Romulus

According to ancient Roman mythology, Romulus and his twin brother Remus were the sons of Rhea Silvia and the war god Mars. After their birth, they were abandoned near the river Tiber. However, fate had other plans for them, and they were discovered and raised by a she-wolf. This iconic image of Romulus and Remus suckling a wolf has become a symbol of Rome's foundation.

The Founding of Rome

As Romulus and Remus grew older and stronger, they decided to establish a city of their own. But a disagreement arose between them about the location of the new city. Romulus preferred to build on Palatine Hill, while Remus favored Aventine Hill.

In a bid to resolve the dispute, the twins consulted auguries – signs and omens from the gods. Remus claimed that he saw six vultures, while Romulus countered by saying he saw twelve. This disagreement led to a heated argument, which ultimately resulted in Remus being killed by his own brother.

The Rise of Rome

With the death of Remus, Romulus became the sole ruler of the new city. He named it Rome after himself and began its expansion. Rome quickly grew into a prosperous city, attracting people from various neighboring tribes and kingdoms.

Romulus implemented a system of governance and created a Senate to assist him in ruling. He is also credited with the establishment of the Roman Legions, a highly disciplined army that would later become the backbone of the Roman Empire.

The Abduction of the Sabine Women

To increase the population of Rome, Romulus found himself faced with the challenge of acquiring wives for his people. In a daring move, he invited the neighboring Sabines to partake in a festival, but when they arrived, the Roman men abducted their women. This act caused a war between the Romans and the Sabines.

However, in a surprising turn of events, the Sabine women intervened and persuaded their husbands and fathers to make peace with Rome. This alliance between the Romans and the Sabines led to the unification of the two peoples and the expansion of Rome's territories.

The Mysterious Disappearance

Despite his achievements, the life of Romulus ended in mystery and controversy. According to legend, one day during a storm, Romulus ascended to the heavens and was deified as the god Quirinus. However, some believe that he was murdered by the Roman Senate, who disapproved of his autocratic rule.

The Legacy of Romulus

Regardless of the circumstances of his disappearance, Romulus left a lasting legacy. Rome went on to become one of the most powerful and influential civilizations in history, dominating Europe, Africa, and Asia. The Romans contributed greatly to the fields of architecture, engineering, law, government, and military strategy.

Jacob Abbott, an American writer and historian, brought the fascinating story of Romulus to life in his book "Romulus Illustrated." Through vivid illustrations and captivating storytelling, Abbott delves into the intricacies of Romulus' life, his struggles, and his accomplishments.

Abbott's book not only explores the mythical aspects of Romulus but also presents historical perspectives that shed light on the foundation of Rome and its early stages of development. It provides readers with a deeper understanding of the man behind the legend and the city that would shape the course of civilization. Romulus Illustrated Jacob Abbott is a must-read for history enthusiasts and anyone intrigued by the origins of ancient Rome.
