The double helix structure of DNA, discovered by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953, is a marvel of nature's engineering. It is composed of two strands that twist around each other, resembling a twisted ladder. The ladder is made up of nucleotides, which are the building blocks of DNA. These nucleotides consist of a sugar molecule, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base.
The nitrogenous bases, called adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine (abbreviated as A, T, C, and G), are essential in the encoding of genetic information. Adenine always pairs with thymine, while cytosine always pairs with guanine. This specific pairing arrangement allows the DNA molecule to replicate and transfer genetic information accurately.

As Max got older and wanted to read more historical fiction, he could not find anything interesting at his reading level. Given that challenge and using her creative writing skills, Rodgers-Ramos spun her love of history into writing an exciting story for Max which became Riding the Double Helix.
