Racing to Preserve Precious Petroleum is comparable to a large puzzle. In this sequence of books, many short stories bring together the long lineage of the automobile’s history. In a puzzle, separate pieces do not show what you will see later. Likewise, the books contain numerous tunes in the concert of automotive evolution; it will come together in its entirety in the end. Similarly to viewing a puzzle, the reader will ‘know the big picture’ after stories have been combined and intertwined in memory.
Inventors, scientists, engineers, chemists, amateur and professional drivers are racing to go farther and faster with every tank of fuel. They are racing to develop new forms of motive power in laboratories and on assembly lines to lower fuel consumption and diminish tailpipe emissions. Industry and society must rise above the problems and results of living with and without oil.
The race is on, literally and figuratively, to save our world and civilization. The unforeseen consequences of burning fossil fuels, seen as the big advancement in the early 20th century, is causing climate change. We all are racing to reverse the damage we have done to the environment and to the health of living beings by turning away from electric vehicles (EV). All forms and classes of racing in motorsports combine people, technology, and the human spirit to excel.
Part 1 of Racing to Preserve Precious Petroleum touches on the early years of the automobile’s life, the pioneers of yesterday & today, and the countries involved. A number of cars are featured, motorsport, an integral part of the automobile, deserves a few pages, and miscellaneous pieces will serve to entertain and inform you.
Many articles begin with a brief history, portray and explain the modern-day situation, and touch on the future. The first book contains the following Chapters:
•Snippets of Automotive History
•Automotive Pioneers and Personalities
•Is Motorsport Business, Entertainment, or Sport?
•The Wheeled Wonders we want
•A little of This and Some of That — the chapter contains articles such as Safety is no accident; Modern monuments to motorcars; From a distant land they come; The beginning of the end of the ‘Petroleum Age’
A ten-year run of ‘Fuel for Thought’ weekly newspaper columns in five papers provided input for these electronic books. Other articles were published on various automotive websites. I have sorted and amended them to bring structure to these books. I have selected the most interesting and informative, and a few humorous ones and added more illustrations because “a picture is worth a thousand words.”
In addition to descriptive illustrations, most short stories contain hyperlinks, as these provide additional independent information sources and references.
Other books in this sequence are ready, only needing formatting for Kindle. Part 2 contains articles about interesting vehicles, such as unusual RVs, military, rescue and service vehicles, amphibians, and others with two, three, and more than four wheels, - and why and how they are designed and fabricated.
Part 3 will include information about designers and their work, facts & figures from interviews, and technological details of the most unusual vehicles you have never seen. Potential further additions will explore the hybrid history and that of electric cars, and it will discover that fuel cells are older than automobiles. Be surprised about what is possible with wheels and computers.
Exploring history by reading Racing to Preserve Precious Petroleum? — Yes! — Absolutely!
