: The Art of Dance Theatre

Dance is a universal language that transcends boundaries and captures the essence of human emotions like no other art form. From ballet to contemporary, various dance forms have emerged and evolved over the centuries, captivating audiences with their beauty and grace. Within the realm of dance, choreography plays a critical role in creating powerful storytelling and making dance theatre a mesmerizing and unforgettable experience.

Understanding Choreography

Choreography is the art of creating and arranging movements, steps, and sequences that form a cohesive dance performance. It involves determining the spatial and temporal aspects of dance, carefully selecting music and costumes, and bringing the choreographer's vision to life on stage. The choreographer's role extends far beyond teaching dance steps; they are essentially the architects of the dance theatre piece, shaping every aspect of the performance.

In dance theatre, choreography goes beyond the individual steps and focuses on the collective storytelling of the dancers on stage. It aims to evoke emotions, convey narratives, and engage the audience on a deeper level. The choreographer must have a clear intent and a deep understanding of the message they want to convey through movement, aligning the dancers' expressions with the overall theme of the performance.

Key Elements of Choreography

1. Movement Vocabulary: Choreography relies on a vast repertoire of movements and steps. Whether it's ballet, contemporary, or any other dance style, the choreographer must select and arrange movements that express their artistic vision effectively.

2. Spatial Design: The arrangement of dancers on stage and the use of space are fundamental to choreography. Spatial design enhances the dynamics of the performance and creates visually captivating formations that enhance the impact of the story being told.

3. Musicality: Music forms the backbone of dance theatre, and choreographers must have a keen sense of musicality. They meticulously choose the music that complements the movements and effectively conveys the desired emotions, ensuring a seamless integration of sound and movement.

4. Costume and Set Design: Choreography is not limited to movement alone; it also incorporates elements such as costumes and set design. These visual components play a crucial role in enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the performance and contributing to the storytelling process.

The Creative Process of Choreography

Choreography is a deeply creative process that often starts with a spark of inspiration. It could be a piece of music, a specific theme, or even a visual image that ignites the choreographer's imagination. From there, they embark on a journey of exploration, experimentation, and collaboration to bring their vision to life.

Research is an integral part of the creative process. Choreographers delve deep into their chosen themes, drawing inspiration from various sources such as literature, history, or personal experiences. This research informs the choreographic choices and adds depth to the storytelling.

The next step is translating the choreographer's vision into movement. They work closely with the dancers, using verbal instructions, demonstrations, and improvisation to develop a movement vocabulary that aligns with the intended narrative. This collaborative environment fosters a sense of ownership and allows the dancers to contribute their own creative insights.

Rehearsals play a crucial role in refining the choreography. Here, the choreographer fine-tunes the movements, enhances the dancers' expressions, and ensures a seamless flow throughout the performance. Rehearsals are not merely about practicing the steps; they are about transforming movement into art and connecting with the audience on a profound level.

Challenges and Triumphs of Dance Theatre Choreography

Choreography for dance theatre presents its unique set of challenges. From intricate technical movements to conveying complex emotions, choreographers must navigate various obstacles to create a captivating piece. One significant challenge is striking the right balance between technique and artistry, ensuring that the technical brilliance does not overshadow the emotional depth of the performance.

Additionally, the collaborative nature of dance theatre can also be challenging. It requires effective communication and mutual understanding between the choreographer, dancers, musicians, and any other collaborators involved. The ability to effectively translate ideas into movement is a crucial aspect of successful choreography.

Despite these challenges, the rewards of dance theatre choreography are immense. Witnessing the seamless integration of movements, music, costumes, and storylines into a breathtaking performance is an extraordinary experience for both the choreographer and the audience. It creates a sense of unity, evokes emotions, and leaves a lasting impact.

: The Dance Theatre Experience

The art of choreography is at the heart of dance theatre, unlocking its magic and transforming it into an enchanting experience. The harmonious blend of movements, music, and storytelling captivates spectators, transporting them to a world where emotions are expressed through the sublime language of dance. It is a testament to the power of human creativity and the ability of dance to touch our souls.

Whether it's the classic elegance of ballet or the raw energy of contemporary dance, choreography continues to evolve, pushing the boundaries of what is possible on stage. It is an art form that resonates with people across cultures and generations, fostering a deep appreciation for the beauty and artistry of dance theatre.

There are many skills one needs to produce a piece of dance. Bruce describes the basic foundation or ingredients of his version of Dance Theatre as: Movement, Drama, Sound and Vision. A choreographer has to study all of them to the best of their ability and learn how to combine them.

There is no definitive method of choreography. Any choreographer who has a voice has learnt and executed it in their way. Choreographers pick up things here and there from what they see, who they work with, and assemble a craft themselves. So much of what they do as artists is intuition and instinct. Creativity cannot be tamed and fully understood or concluded. Artists are dealing with imagination.

On Choreography and Making Dance Theatre will be an invaluable insight into Bruce's approach, both artistic and practical, as he documents his process from the beginnings of ideas to the realisation of a full-length production. Bruce provides am explanation of the range of skills he believes are required, and all that needs to be considered in the creation of dance theatre.

Award-winning choreographer Mark Bruce's aim as an artist is to tap the subconscious, our hearts; transcend our everyday lives and hopefully stumble upon some truth along the way. On Choreography and Making Dance Theatre is an invaluable artist's guide to making innovative new dance work.
