Eleven-year-old Ruthie Gerstein is lonelier than she's ever been living with her older sister Esther in an apartment above a movie theatre in downtown Toronto. She hardly knows her sister. At the age of three, for her safety from the looming World War, her Polish parents sent Ruthie to England, with the help of the Kinder transport program. There she lived with a foster family in London. After the war, her sister, the only one of Ruthie's immediate family to survive, arranged to have Ruthie join her in Paris so they could immigrate to Canada with the first group of war orphans settling to Canada in September, 1947. under the government's War Orphans Plan.
Ruthie wonders why her sister even bothered since most of the time Esther leaves Ruthie on her own. Mr. and Mrs. Mendelson, who own and run the movie theatre below the apartment, invite Ruthie to come down the theatre whenever she feels lonely. Ruthie offers to work as a ticket taker, and now spends the early evening at the Gem Theatre, taking tickets and watching the first feature because she just loves movies. When she goes upstairs to get ready for bed, she can still hear the sound of the second feature rising through the floor. On the nights she feels the loneliest, she lies down on the floor and takes comfort in the company of her movie friends.
Mrs. Mendelson keeps asking Ruthie if she has made any friends at school yet. Ruthie, who is shy and speaks with a stammer, says not yet, ashamed to admit the other students either ignore her or make fun of her.
Can Ruthie overcome her loneliness and isolation with the help of several real life friends she meets at the movies?.
