This is the untold story of those tumultuous months that witnessed great historical events alongside personal struggles.
A Nation in Crisis
In the early 1940s, as World War II continued to engulf the globe, President Roosevelt led a nation that was desperately seeking ways to bring an end to the devastating conflict. His leadership was instrumental in uniting the American people and fostering a sense of hope and determination. However, deep beneath the charismatic exterior, FDR was grappling with his own health issues, which had become progressively worse in recent years.

The Declining Health of a Leader
As the war raged on, so did Roosevelt's health problems. Suffering from hypertension and heart disease, he navigated the complexities of his role while concealing the extent of his physical struggles from the public eye. The pressure on Roosevelt, both from his demanding job and the toll it took on his health, would ultimately contribute to the deterioration of his well-being.
Despite his declining health, President Roosevelt continued to work tirelessly, engaging in political negotiations, laying the groundwork for the United Nations, and implementing policies that shaped the nation's future. Behind closed doors, however, his physical limitations were taking an increasing toll on his mental and emotional state. Every decision he made during this time carried immense weight, knowing that it could change the course of history.
The Roosevelt Family Tragedy
Amidst the chaos of global conflict and personal health battles, tragedy struck the Roosevelt family in the spring of 1945. Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt's son, Lieutenant Colonel James Roosevelt, who had valiantly served in the war, tragically passed away due to a sudden illness. This devastating loss shocked the family, further exacerbating the emotional strain on the President.
The Yalta Conference and the Beginning of the End
In February 1945, as the war in Europe neared its , President Roosevelt embarked on one of his most crucial diplomatic missions – the Yalta Conference. Alongside British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin, FDR aimed to shape the post-war world and outline plans for a new global order. However, his deteriorating health began to take a toll during these negotiations, foreshadowing the challenges that lay ahead.
The Final Days
Upon returning from the Yalta Conference, President Roosevelt's health continued to decline rapidly. On April 12, 1945, while staying at his retreat in Georgia, he suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage and passed away at the age of 63. The news of his death sent shockwaves around the world, leaving both the nation and the international community in mourning.
A Legacy Remembered
The legacy left by Franklin Delano Roosevelt is immeasurable. His leadership during one of the most challenging periods in history, his efforts to combat the Great Depression, and his unwavering determination to secure victory in World War II shaped the future of the United States and the world. The last months of his presidency were a culmination of his life's work and a testament to his unwavering dedication to public service.
Remembering FDR: A Beacon of Hope
As we reflect on the last months of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's life, we are reminded of his resilience, his deep commitment to the American people, and his visionary leadership. Despite the challenges he faced, both personally and politically, FDR never lost sight of his duty to serve his nation.
Franklin Roosevelt's final months were a time of great uncertainty and personal anguish, yet they also reveal the strength of humanity in times of crisis. The legacy of this remarkable leader continues to inspire us to face adversity with unwavering determination and compassion.

A New York Times 2016 Notable Book
“By far the most enigmatic leading figure” of World War II. That’s how the British military historian John Keegan described Franklin D. Roosevelt, who frequently left his contemporaries guessing, never more so than at the end of his life. Here, in a hugely insightful account, a prizewinning author and journalist untangles the narrative threads of Roosevelt’s final months, showing how he juggled the strategic, political, and personal choices he faced as the war, his presidency, and his life raced in tandem to their climax.
The story has been told piecemeal but never like this, with a close focus on Roosevelt himself and his hopes for a stable international order after the war, and how these led him into a prolonged courtship of Joseph Stalin, the Soviet dictator, involving secret, arduous journeys to Tehran and the Crimea. In between, as the war entered its final phase, came the thunderbolt of a dire medical diagnosis, raising urgent questions about the ability of the longest-serving president to stand for a fourth term at a time when he had little choice. Neither his family nor top figures in his administration were informed of his diagnosis, let alone the public or his closest ally, Winston Churchill. With D-Day looming, Roosevelt took a month off on a plantation in the south where he was examined daily by a navy cardiologist, then waited two more months before finally announcing, on the eve of his party’s convention, that he’d be a candidate. A political grand master still, he manipulated the selection of a new running mate, with an eye to a possible succession, displaying some of his old vigor and wit in a winning campaign.
With precision and compassion, Joseph Lelyveld examines the choices Roosevelt faced, shining new light on his state of mind, preoccupations, and motives, both as leader of the wartime alliance and in his personal life. Confronting his own mortality, Roosevelt operated in the belief that he had a duty to see the war through to the end, telling himself he could always resign if he found he couldn’t carry on.
Lelyveld delivers an incisive portrait of this deliberately inscrutable man, a consummate leader to the very last.
