Known for his masterful characters and intricate plots, Simenon's work has left an indelible mark on the genre. Among his countless novels, one stands out as a true masterpiece of noir literature: "Henri Duchemin And His Shadows".

Unveiling the Shadows

Originally published in 1946, "Henri Duchemin And His Shadows" takes us deep into the underbelly of post-war France. Through his eloquent prose and innate understanding of human nature, Simenon transports his readers into a world of despair, desperation, and moral ambiguity.

The story follows Duchemin, a troubled but talented pianist, as he descends into a life of crime. Haunted by past mistakes and driven by a sense of hopelessness, he finds himself entangled in a web of deceit and treachery. As the plot unfolds, the reader is drawn deeper and deeper into Duchemin's twisted reality, unsure of what is fact or fiction, truth or illusion.

Simenon's writing style is intense and atmospheric, perfectly capturing the dark and brooding nature of the narrative. Each page oozes with tension and suspense, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Simenon's ability to create a palpable sense of dread is unmatched, as he masterfully weaves together elements of psychological thriller, crime procedural, and existential drama.

A Journey Through New York

"Henri Duchemin And His Shadows" takes readers on a journey through the streets of New York City, providing a fascinating glimpse into the city's underbelly during the mid-20th century. Simenon's descriptive prowess is unparalleled, as he brings to life the sights, sounds, and smells of the bustling metropolis. From dimly lit alleyways to smoky jazz clubs, the city itself becomes a character in its own right.

The vivid imagery allows readers to immerse themselves fully in the narrative, feeling as though they are walking alongside Duchemin, experiencing the same emotions and fears. Simenon's attention to detail is meticulous, painting a sensory landscape that is as mesmerizing as it is disturbing.

A Timeless Classic

Even after more than seven decades since its original publication, "Henri Duchemin And His Shadows" remains as relevant and captivating as ever. The themes explored in the novel - guilt, redemption, and the nature of evil - are universal and transcend time and place. Simenon's insights into the human condition continue to resonate with readers, reminding us of our own frailties and the inherent complexities of existence.

An NYRB Classics Original

Emmanuel Bove was one of the most original writers  to come out of twentieth-century France and a popular  success in his day. Discovered by Colette, who arranged for the publication of his first novel, My Friends, Bove enjoyed a busy literary career, until the German occupation silenced him. During his lifetime, his novels and stories were admired by Rilke, the surrealists, Camus, and Beckett, who said of him that “more than anyone else he has an instinct for the essential detail.”

Henry Duchemin and His Shadows is the ideal to Bove’s world, with its cast of stubborn isolatoes who call to mind Melville’s Bartleby, Walser’s “little men,” and Rhys’s lost women. Henri Duchemin, the protagonist of the collection’s first story, “Night Crime,” is ambivalent, afraid of appearing ridiculous, desperate for money: in other words, the perfect prey. Criminals, beautiful women, and profiteers threaten the sad young men of Bove’s stories, but worse yet are the interior voices and paranoia that propel them to their fates. The poet of the flophouse and the dive, the park bench and the pigeon’s crumb, Bove is also a deeply empathetic writer for whom no defeat is so great as to silence desire.
