3. Development: From Plantations to Resorts
While Hawaii's breathtaking landscapes and cultural treasures lured visitors, it was the booming sugar and pineapple industries in the late 19th century that provided the foundation for the island's tourism development. As plantations flourished, infrastructure expanded, and luxurious resorts began to emerge. Hawaii was no longer just a curiosity; it had become a destination of choice for those seeking beauty, relaxation, and adventure.
4. Promotion: Surfing the Waves of Pop Culture
The 20th century witnessed a significant shift in Hawaii's tourism promotion, as popular culture embraced the aloha spirit. Movies like "Blue Hawaii" starring Elvis Presley brought the islands to the silver screen, captivating audiences worldwide. The postcard-perfect imagery of surfers riding giant waves and hula girls swaying their hips further fueled the desire to embark on a Hawaiian adventure.
5. Maturity: Balancing Preservation and Growth
As the popularity of Hawaii as a tourist destination soared, the islands faced the challenge of preserving their natural and cultural heritage while accommodating the growing number of visitors. Striking a delicate balance between tourism development and sustainability took center stage. Efforts to protect the fragile ecosystems, manage tourism impacts, and maintain the authenticity of the Hawaiian experience defined this phase of the tourism life cycle.
6. Decline and Rejuvenation: Experiencing the Lull and Bouncing Back
Every destination goes through cycles of ups and downs, and Hawaii is no exception. The early 21st century witnessed a decline in tourism due to various factors, such as economic turmoil, natural disasters, and increased competition from other destinations. However, Hawaii proved its resilience by adapting, innovating, and diversifying its offerings. The islands embraced eco-tourism, cultural tourism, and adventure tourism, rekindling the interest of travelers worldwide.
7. Future Possibilities: Sustaining Paradise for Generations to Come
As Hawaii moves into the future, tourism stakeholders recognize the importance of long-term sustainability and responsible tourism practices. Efforts to mitigate environmental impacts, support local communities, and preserve indigenous culture are paving the way for a harmonious coexistence between tourism and Hawaii's natural wonders. With the rise of eco-conscious travelers and the increasing demand for authentic experiences, the future of Hawaii tourism is filled with exciting opportunities and challenges.

Hawaii is the most isolated island chain in the world. Hawaii is located near the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Honolulu is located 2,392 miles (3,850 kilometers) west of San Francisco, 4039 miles (6,500 kilometers) east of Tokyo, and 4,536 miles (7,300 kilometers) northeast of Australia. Given its remoteness, it is amazing that Hawaii became one of the most well-known tourist destinations in the world. Hawaii often has been referred to as the Crossroads of the Pacific. Historically, ships and airplanes stopped off in Hawaii to resupply and refuel.
Hawaii's success as a tourist destination always has been of interest to professionals and academics throughout the world. This is the first book that covers the historical development of tourism in Hawaii from the late 1780s to 2019. It offers a different perspective of the key factors that contributed to Hawaii's success.
There have been numerous studies on Hawaii's tourism, but most published studies have been government funded or technical studies analyzing specific aspects of tourism. The business aspects of tourism typically have not been analyzed in previous studies of Hawaii's tourism. This book examines how Hawaii developed and grew into one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The analysis is provided from three perspectives: 1) a conceptual framework for analyzing tourism; 2) historical development of tourism with attention to key factors which influenced the growth of tourism, underlying patterns of development, and business strategies; and 3) Hawaii's experience within the context of world travel, especially the Asia-Pacific region.
