The Unforgiving Nature of the Sahara Desert
The Sahara Desert, the largest hot desert in the world, presented endless challenges to the Desert Sailor. With scorching temperatures, vast stretches of barren land, and sand dunes that seemed to stretch towards infinity, conquering this unforgiving landscape was no easy feat.
However, the Desert Sailor embraced these challenges with an unwavering determination. He braved sandstorms that would engulf the surroundings, sandblasting everything in sight. He navigated treacherous canyons and ravines, where one false step could result in disaster. Yet, he remained undeterred in his quest for discovery.
An Encounter with Ancient Civilizations
As the Desert Sailor ventured deeper into the Sahara, he stumbled upon remnants of ancient civilizations that had long been lost to time. Exploring forgotten ruins and deciphering hieroglyphs, he shed light on fascinating stories of the past.
In one of his most remarkable discoveries, the Desert Sailor uncovered a hidden oasis that once served as a trading hub for nomadic tribes. The well-preserved artifacts and intricate carvings left behind by these ancient peoples painted a vivid picture of their vibrant lives amidst the harsh desert environment.
Befriending Local Tribes
The Desert Sailor's adventures were not limited to archaeological wonders alone. Along the way, he encountered nomadic tribes and befriended their members, immersing himself in their rich cultural traditions and gaining insights into their way of life.
The Desert Sailor shared stories from afar, regaling the tribes with tales of distant lands beyond the dunes. In return, the tribes taught him survival skills, guiding him through perilous terrains and sharing their ancestral wisdom.
A Legacy of Exploration
The year 1951 marked the final chapter of the Desert Sailor's extraordinary adventures. Having explored vast stretches of the Sahara Desert, his legacy would forever be etched in the annals of exploration.

Some readers complained about the abrupt end of Desert Sailor on the San Francisco waterfront in 1946 so the WW II sailor published a sequel that takes him and his bride through a new and much more enjoyable series of peacetime adventures.
After his honorable discharge from the navy Fitch went to Harvard College as a GI Bill student. He fell for a pretty Irish Radcliffe girl in a Spanish class. In his senior year he won a Sheldon Travel Fellowship, graduated on a Thursday in June 1950 and married Claire Thompson the following Sunday.
Three months later they were in South America. Follow their “Extreme Economy Class” travels, in which they covered 13,000 miles by rail, jitney, bus, truck, ferry, steamship and bulk grain carrier, through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Brazil.
