Scenic Canadian Landscape With Mountains And Trees Covered By Snow Fashioning The Canadian Landscape: Essays On Travel Writing Tourism And National Identity In The Pre Automobile Era

Canada, with its diverse geography and stunning landscapes, has consistently served as a muse for artists and designers alike. From the towering Rocky Mountains to the rugged coastal regions, the Canadian landscape offers a multitude of inspiration for the world of fashion. In this article, we explore how fashion has been influenced by the beauty and majesty of Canada's natural surroundings.

The Power of Nature in Fashion

Nature has an innate ability to evoke emotions and captivate our senses. Canadian fashion designers have tapped into this power, using the country's rich landscapes as a source of inspiration. The lush forests, pristine lakes, and expansive meadows have deeply influenced the colors, textures, and patterns found in Canadian fashion.

Capturing the Wilderness

The vast wilderness of Canada, home to numerous national parks and protected areas, has made a significant impact on fashion trends. Designers often use earthy tones, such as deep greens and browns, to represent the serene beauty of the Canadian forests. The intricate patterns found in wildlife and plant life, such as the intricate markings on a snowshoe hare or the delicate petals of a wildflower, are often emulated in fabric designs and embroidery.

Embracing Winter Wonders

Canada's long, snowy winters have also left a lasting impression on Canadian fashion. The country's ability to transform into a winter wonderland has elevated winter fashion to new heights. Traditional winter garments, such as fur-lined parkas and cozy woolen sweaters, have become iconic symbols of Canadian style. These fashion pieces not only provide warmth but also embody the spirit of resilience and adaptability found in Canadian culture.

Exploring Regional Influences

Canada's fashion landscape is not just influenced by its grand natural vistas but also by its regional diversity. The country's distinct provinces and territories each have their unique style that reflects their local culture, history, and environment.

Coastal Chic

The coastal regions of British Columbia and the Atlantic provinces boast rugged shorelines, charming fishing villages, and a rich maritime heritage. These influences are often observed in the fashion choices of coastal Canadians. Nautical-themed clothing, waterproof outerwear, and natural materials like hemp and linen are prominent in coastal fashion. The colors of the sea, sky, and earth are incorporated into designs, creating a sense of connection to the surrounding landscape.

Prairie Poise

The vast prairies of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba showcase a different aesthetic. The open plains, golden wheat fields, and big sky inspire a sense of freedom and simplicity. Prairie fashion emphasizes comfort and practicality without sacrificing style. Denim, plaid shirts, and cowboy boots are commonly seen in prairie-inspired outfits. The warmth of natural earth tones, reflecting the colors of the prairies in various seasons, brings a sense of warmth and connection to the land.

Sustainable Fashion and Environmental Responsibility

As the world grows more conscious of environmental issues, the Canadian fashion industry has embraced sustainability and eco-friendly practices. This commitment to environmental responsibility is deeply rooted in the reverence Canadians hold for their precious landscapes.

Ethical Fashion

Many Canadian fashion designers prioritize ethical and fair trade practices. They work closely with local artisans and Indigenous communities, celebrating their traditional craftsmanship and cultural heritage. This collaboration not only supports local economies but also ensures the preservation of cultural traditions and knowledge.

Eco-Friendly Materials

The use of sustainable materials in Canadian fashion has gained traction in recent years. Designers have embraced organic cotton, hemp, and other eco-friendly fabrics as alternatives to synthetic materials. Recycling and upcycling are also popular techniques used to reduce waste and extend the life cycle of garments.

From the mountains to the coasts, and everywhere in between, the Canadian landscape fuels the creative spirit of designers, resulting in unique fashion expressions. By fostering sustainability and embracing regional influences, Canadian fashion continues to evolve, leaving an indelible mark on the global fashion scene.

Interpretations of Canada's emerging identity have been largely based on a relatively small corpus of literary writing and landscape paintings, overlooking the influence of the British and American travel writers who published hundreds of books and articles that did much to fix the image of Canada in the popular imagination.

In Fashioning the Canadian Landscape, J.I. Little examines how Canada, much like the United States, came to be identified with its natural landscape. Little argues that in contrast to the American identification with the wilderness sublime, however, Canada’s image was strongly influenced by the picturesque convention favoured by British travel writers.

This amply illustrated volume includes chapters ranging from Labrador to British Columbia, some of which focus on such notable British authors as Rupert Brooke and Rudyard Kipling, and others on talented American writers such as Charles Dudley Warner. Based not only on the views of the landscape but on the racist descriptions of the Indigenous peoples and the romanticization of the Canadian ‘folk’, Little argues that the national image that emerged was colonialist as well as colonial in nature.
