When we think of the bustling streets of East London in the 1970s and 1980s, one iconic image that comes to mind is the red double-decker buses that traversed the city. These buses were not just a means of transportation, but symbols of a vibrant era. Let's take a nostalgic ride back in time and explore the charm of East London buses during these decades.
The Evolution of East London Buses
In the 1970s and 1980s, the buses in East London underwent significant transformations. The once famous Routemaster buses, with their unique design and open rear platform, started to be replaced by modern, more efficient vehicles. However, the charm of the classic Routemaster buses still lingered in the hearts of Londoners.

The streets of East London buzzed with excitement as the red double-decker buses became a common sight. Their iconic red color made them stand out from the crowd, attracting attention wherever they went. Whether it was during the rush hour commutes or late-night journeys, these buses were an integral part of the city's identity.
The Experience of Riding East London Buses
Stepping foot on an East London bus in the 1970s and 1980s was like entering a time capsule. The interiors boasted a distinct vintage charm with the wooden handrails, leather seats, and large windows that allowed passengers to enjoy panoramic views of the city.
The conductors and drivers of these buses had a unique, friendly demeanor that added to the overall experience. They knew their regular passengers by name and often engaged in friendly banter. These small interactions fostered a sense of community and made the daily commute a little more bearable.
Exploring East London with Buses
The extensive bus routes allowed Londoners to explore every nook and cranny of East London. From the vibrant markets of Brick Lane to the historic landmarks like Tower Bridge, the buses took passengers on an adventure through the city's rich history and diverse culture.
One of the most iconic bus routes was the number 15, which started its journey at East Ham and ended at Trafalgar Square. This route offered a glimpse into the heart of East London, passing through areas like Stepney, Whitechapel, and Aldgate.
The End of an Era
As the 1980s came to a close, East London witnessed a shift in its transportation system. The classic Routemaster buses were gradually phased out, and newer models like the Dennis Dart buses took their place. While these modern buses offered increased efficiency, they lacked the charm and nostalgia associated with the older fleet.
Today, as we look back on the East London buses of the 1970s and 1980s, there is a sense of longing for a simpler time. These buses were more than just a mode of transportation; they were symbols of an era. The memories of cramped upper decks, the distinct sound of the engine, and the friendly conductors will forever be etched in the hearts of those who experienced them.

The East London bus scene in 1969 was one of contrast. This was London’s industrial heartland with the River Thames bankside dominated by docks, power stations and heavy industry, including the massive Ford Motor works at Dagenham. Inland, dense inner city housing gave way to terraces and vast council estates as you travelled eastwards. The red buses of London Transport held a monopoly relieved only by the Green Line coach routes also run by London Transport. However, in the outer reaches of the Greater London Council area there was a remarkable overlap as London Transport’s red buses delved deep into Essex while the Eastern National buses from Essex ran deep into London Transport territory.Twenty years later, much had changed. The docks and power stations had closed and the London Docklands Development Corporation was transforming the old docks into Docklands. Changes in the bus industry saw London Transport split up in 1970, then from 1985 deregulation led to routes being tendered out and new operators taking them over. This book tells the story of the change in the East London bus scene in the 1970s and 1980s
