How to Crochet the Catherine Wheel Bavarian Stitch

Before attempting the Catherine Wheel Bavarian stitch, it's essential to have a solid understanding of basic crochet stitches such as chain stitch, single crochet, and double crochet. Once you feel comfortable with these stitches, you can move on to mastering the Catherine Wheel Bavarian stitch.

  1. Create a foundation chain according to the desired width of your project.
  2. Single crochet into the second chain from the hook, and in each chain across. This will create the base row.
  3. Begin the Catherine Wheel Bavarian stitch by chaining four. Skip the next stitch, then double crochet into the next stitch.
  4. Repeat step 3 four more times, creating five double crochets with a skipped stitch in between each set. This will form your first "spoke" of the Catherine Wheel.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 across the row until you reach the last stitch. Double crochet into the last stitch and turn.
  6. In the next row, chain three and double crochet into the space between the last double crochet and the skipped stitch from the previous row to create a shell stitch.
  7. Continue step 6 across the row, creating shell stitches in each space between the previous row's spokes.
  8. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you have achieved the desired length for your project.
  9. Finish off your work with a neat edging, and voila! You have successfully completed the Catherine Wheel Bavarian stitch.
