Unlike other modes of transportation, buses offer the unique advantage of letting you comfortably witness the stunning landscapes, charming villages, and historic landmarks that you might have otherwise missed while driving or using other modes of transport.

The History of Buses in Lancashire

To truly appreciate the beauty of the county's bus network, it is essential to understand its historical significance. Lancashire’s public transport history dates back several centuries, with horse-drawn stagecoaches being the primary mode of transportation until the advent of motorized buses in the early 20th century.

As the county's population grew, so did the demand for public transport. This led to the establishment of Lancashire United Transport (LUT) in 1905, marking a crucial milestone in the evolution of Lancashire's bus network. Over the years, LUT expanded its services, connecting various towns and villages within the county.

However, it wasn't until the 1970s that the Lancashire County Council took over many bus services and formed the Lancashire United Transport (Stagecoach Manchester) we know today. The integration of modern buses, increased routes, and improved connectivity greatly enhanced Lancashire's public transportation system.

Exploring Lancashire's Hidden Gems

Imagine exploring ancient ruins, experiencing breathtaking coastal views, and visiting quaint villages that exude traditional British charm. All of this becomes possible when you hop aboard one of Lancashire's buses.

From the picturesque seaside town of Blackpool, famous for its iconic tower and vibrant promenade, to the captivating Pendle Hill that has a rich history associated with the Pendle Witch Trials, Lancashire promises an array of attractions to suit every interest.

With its scenic countryside, vibrant cities like Lancaster and Preston, and numerous National Parks, Lancashire offers a diverse range of destinations that can be effortlessly explored using the county's efficient and reliable bus network.

The boundaries of the current county of Lancashire were established in 1974 when the Furness district was lost to the newly formed Cumbria. Meanwhile Merseyside and Greater Manchester gobbled up much of the southern portion of the original county. However, some parts of the former West Riding of Yorkshire were gained. The major bus operator was, for many years, Ribble Motor Services. After sale it became part of the Stagecoach Group, though the East Lancashire operations were sold on to Blazefield, which later went to Transdev. Back in the 1970s many municipalities in Lancashire operated their own buses and these provided a great variety of vehicles and liveries. Most of the council-owned companies were eventually sold off leaving just one—Blackpool—with its large bus fleet and a modern tram system. Until the 1986 deregulation of the bus industry, there were very few independents running stage services in the county. There were just Fishwick’s smart green buses around Leyland, Preston, and Chorley. This company ceased trading in 2015, but others have entered the market, such as Pilkington’s in the Accrington area. John Law has been photographing the county’s buses since 1974, building up a massive collection of images. He has put together the best and most interesting of these within this book.
