From the small village of Asyrmatos in Greece to the vast landscapes of Canada, the journey of a family spans over 80 years. This tale is one of courage, determination, and the pursuit of the Canadian dream. Join us as we delve into their fascinating story.
A Small Village with Big Dreams
Asyrmatos, a picturesque village nestled in the mountains of Greece, was home to the Papadopoulos family for generations. Life in this tight-knit community revolved around agriculture and a strong sense of community, but opportunities for a brighter future were limited.
The patriarch of the family, Dimitrios Papadopoulos, was a hardworking farmer who dreamed of providing his children with better opportunities. He often found himself gazing up at the starry night sky, imagining what lay beyond the village's borders.

An Unexpected Twist
Opportunity came knocking when a distant relative living in Canada reached out to Dimitrios. George Papadopoulos, a successful businessman who had emigrated to Canada years ago, offered the family a chance for a new beginning.
The news spread through Asyrmatos like wildfire, and soon enough, the entire village was buzzing with excitement and anticipation. The Papadopoulos family weighed their options, hesitating to leave behind their ancestral land and the only life they had ever known. Yet, deep down, they knew the possibilities that awaited them in the land of opportunities.
A Leap of Faith
In 1940, with heavy hearts but a renewed sense of hope, the Papadopoulos family bid farewell to their family, friends, and the life they had always known. They boarded a ship bound for Canada, unsure of what awaited them on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.
The journey was grueling, marked by uncertainty and seasickness. But the perseverance and strength of the Papadopoulos family kept them going. They held on to their dreams of a better life for their children, as they crossed the vast expanse of the ocean, leaving their old lives behind.
Settling in a New Land
Upon arriving in Canada, the Papadopoulos family faced the challenges of adapting to a new culture, language, and way of life. However, they were met with warmth and support from both the Greek community and their newfound Canadian friends.
George Papadopoulos, their relative in Canada, played a vital role in helping the family settle. He guided them through the process of finding employment, understanding Canadian customs, and embracing their new identities as proud Canadians.
A Tradition That Lives On
Eighty years have passed since that fateful journey from Asyrmatos to Canada. The Papadopoulos family has thrived, with subsequent generations achieving remarkable success in various fields. They have become doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, artists, and community leaders.
Every year, the Papadopoulos family gathers for a reunion, where stories of their ancestors' voyage are shared, and a deep gratitude for the opportunities bestowed upon them resonates. They honor their roots while celebrating their Canadian heritage, passing down the timeless values of hard work, resilience, and unity.
A Legacy Worth Celebrating
The journey from Asyrmatos to Canada is not merely a family's story; it is a testament to the enduring human spirit and the pursuit of a better life. It serves as a reminder that dreams can be pursued and achieved, even in the face of uncertainty and adversity.
As we celebrate this incredible 80-year journey, let us reflect upon the courage and determination displayed by the Papadopoulos family. Their story inspires us to embrace new beginnings, honor our heritage, and pursue our wildest dreams.

Accounts of talented, gold-hearted people who lived life 'on the ground' are rarely heard. This is about one of them. Within a family's history and 'snapshots' of Athens, Winnipeg, Vancouver and the Far North back in the day, is the story of how one person overcame hardship and held on to kindness using old-school grit, living by his wits, and keeping a sense of humour. Nick Kollias, fatherless at age 6, grew up in the long demolished, almost mythic refugee 'ghetto' on the hill next to the Acropolis in the wake of Greece's catastrophic defeat in war. He sailed to Canada at 17 but was tricked by his sponsor/employer, and then members of his own family. He bucked tradition to marry an Englishwoman, won life's lottery - love - and thrived, starting his own businesses and even building his own home from the age of 11. With 'badass' acts of kindness, extraordinary physical and mental strength, wisdom and modesty, despite the hardships and disappointments, he just 'took it as it is' to make the best of each step amid the joys and sorrows. Hence publication -- a privilege that every kid wishes they could do -- write about their parent.
