Growing up on the enchanting island of Madeira is an experience unlike any other. With its picturesque landscapes, charming culture, and warm-hearted people, this little paradise in the Atlantic Ocean has left an imprint on my soul that will last a lifetime.

The Colors of Nature

One of my fondest memories is the sight of the colorful flowers that blanket the island. Madeira, also known as the "Floating Garden of the Atlantic," is renowned for its diverse flora, thanks to the temperate climate and fertile soil. Wandering through the flower markets, I would marvel at the vibrant orchids, delicate hydrangeas, and breathtaking bougainvillea.

But it wasn't just the flowers that painted the island with vivid hues. Madeira boasts rugged mountains, lush vegetation, and dramatic cliffs that plunge into the crystalline sea below. The emerald green of the Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, would beckon me to explore its hidden trails and mystical waterfalls.

A Playground of Adventure

Despite being a small island, Madeira offers endless opportunities for exploration and adventure. As a child, I would spend my days climbing the rocky cliffs, building sandcastles on the pristine beaches, and swimming in the refreshing turquoise waters.

One of the most thrilling experiences was taking part in the annual sled race in Monte. Holding on tightly as the sled rushed down the steep cobblestone streets, I would become one with the wind, my heart pounding with adrenaline. The laughter and cheers of spectators echoed through the narrow streets, creating an atmosphere of pure joy.

A Rich Cultural Tapestry

In Madeira, history and culture are woven into the fabric of everyday life. From vibrant festivals to traditional music and dance, the island embraces its cultural heritage with pride. As a child, I would eagerly anticipate the festivities of Carnival, where the streets would come alive with vibrant costumes, lively music, and traditional delicacies.

The island is also home to many unique traditions and crafts. I would marvel at the skill of artisans as they crafted intricate lacework and wickerwork, preserving Madeira's rich handicraft heritage. The sweet melodies of the local fado music filled the air, carrying stories of love, longing, and the island's history.

The Warmth of Madeiran Hearts

But what truly sets Madeira apart is its people. With their genuine warmth, kindness, and hospitality, they make you feel like family from the first moment you step foot on the island. As a child, I would spend hours running through the cobbled streets, greeted by smiles and waves from neighbors and friends.

Family and community are celebrated in Madeira, and every occasion becomes an opportunity for heartfelt gatherings filled with laughter, traditional cuisine, and lively conversations. These moments of togetherness have shaped the person I am today, instilling in me a deep love for my roots and a sense of belonging.

A Treasure Worth Preserving

As time passes, the world changes, and Madeira continues to evolve. Yet, the memories of my childhood on this picturesque island remain vivid and cherished. The magic of Madeira is not confined to its breathtaking landscapes or vibrant culture; it resides in the hearts of those who have been fortunate enough to call it home.

As I look back on my world ago memories of Madeira childhood, I am grateful for the experiences that have shaped my perspective and enriched my soul. Madeira will forever hold a special place in my heart, reminding me of the beauty that exists both within and beyond its shores.

This book can honestly be described as unique. It will appeal to all ages and would make an excellent present. Maria is now a hospital cleaner, a modern woman with a mobile phone and a car. But in her lifetime she has lived through several centuries of change. She tells in her own words of the years between 1960-80, when she was growing up in Madeira and for a while in colonial Mozambique. Her society had hardly changed since the first settlers arrived in 1420. Because most people were illiterate, all knowledge was passed on by word of mouth in an unbroken chain dating back to Neolithic times. This is rapidly vanishing, so this is a chance to share in that knowledge before it is lost forever. Her village was in the remotest part of the island and had no gas, electricity or running water – not even a proper road. As she says “They didn’t have ox carts, but a sort of sledge”. Maria tells in frank unsentimental language of the hard work on the land, and of the poverty, where nothing was ever wasted. Her school was like something described by Dickens, and there was not much time for play. But everyone made the most of the feast days. We hear about spirits who walk the night. And she tells of strange remedies for illness -which modern science has now shown to have a sound basis. Above all there is a deep sense of community, and most important, of the deep bonds of the family.Andy Bungay, reviewing on Riverside Radio, London said: “Her world is vividly brought to life in very simple, direct, tell-it-like-it-is prose. Her story would make a pretty extraordinary art house movie.”
