They say that a dog is a man's best friend, and in the case of my life, this couldn't be more accurate. About a year ago, I embarked on a journey that would forever change my perspective on love, companionship, and the extraordinary bond between humans and their furry friends.

It all started when I decided to welcome a canine companion into my life. Little did I know that fate had an unexpected surprise in store for me—four incredible dogs who would become my partners in crime, confidantes, and fellow adventurers.

Meet the Squad

Let me introduce you to this lively crew that has brought immeasurable joy into my life throughout the past twelve months.

Max: The Fearless Leader

Max, an energetic German Shepherd, was the first addition to my growing pack. With his intelligent eyes and unwavering loyalty, Max quickly became the pack's unofficial leader. He taught me the true meaning of responsibility, helping me understand the importance of routine, exercise, and setting boundaries.

Whether it was going for long hikes in the woods or playing fetch at the local park, Max's adventurous spirit fueled our daily escapades, leaving us with countless unforgettable memories.

Lola: The Quirky Adventurer

Lola, an adorable Basset Hound with short, stubby legs and a keen sense of smell, joined our clan shortly after Max. She proved to be the perfect balance to Max's energetic personality. Lola's love for exploring new scents and chasing after squirrels brought laughter and excitement to our daily routine.

Her unique ability to brighten any day, even during gloomy moments, taught me the importance of finding joy in the smallest of things—like a wagging tail or a warm snuggle.

Bentley: The Loyal Companion

Bentley, a graceful Golden Retriever, became part of our team a few months later. With his soft, golden fur and gentle nature, Bentley quickly earned the title of the most loyal companion. His unconditional love and unwavering support during difficult times reminded me of the power of a forgiving heart and the healing comfort that a dog's presence can bring.

Whether it was cuddling up on the couch or taking quiet walks on a rainy day, Bentley's calming influence helped us find peace in moments of chaos.

Lucy: The Playful Fireball

Last but certainly not least, Lucy, a mischievous Dalmatian, completed our four-legged squad. With her freckled coat and endless enthusiasm, Lucy brought life and laughter to our daily routine. From her hilarious antics to her contagious energy, Lucy reminded us to never take life too seriously and to always make room for playfulness.

Lucy taught me that it's okay to embrace silliness, to let go of inhibitions, and to find joy in the simplest of games, like catch or hide-and-seek.

A Year of Unforgettable Adventures

Throughout the past twelve months, my life has been a whirlwind of memorable moments and extraordinary adventures—all thanks to my four dogs. Together, we have explored picturesque hiking trails, played in sun-kissed meadows, and even braved frosty winter days.

Our journeys have not only connected us with nature but also with other fellow dog lovers. We have encountered countless people during our expeditions, and the dogs have become our ultimate icebreakers, sparking conversations, creating new friendships, and leaving lasting impressions wherever they go.

The Lessons I've Learned

While the past twelve months have undoubtedly been a wild ride, they have also been an incredible learning experience. Through the eyes of Max, Lola, Bentley, and Lucy, I have discovered a newfound appreciation for the simple joys in life.

I have learned to embrace spontaneity, to cherish quiet moments of solitude, and to find beauty in the unlikeliest of places. The dogs have taught me to live in the present, to savor each wagging tail and wet nose, and to always greet each day with a grateful heart.

The Bond That Lasts a Lifetime

As our journey continues, I am reminded each day of the profound impact that dogs can have on our lives. While they may only be with us for a fraction of our own existence, the love and memories they leave behind last a lifetime.

From teaching us about responsibility and loyalty to reminding us of the power of laughter and play, dogs bring endless joy, wisdom, and companionship into our lives. They offer us unwavering support, unwarranted forgiveness, and an unbreakable bond that not even time can erase.

Twelve months ago, I welcomed one dog into my life, oblivious to the incredible journey that lay ahead. Little did I know that Max, Lola, Bentley, and Lucy would transform my world in ways I could never have imagined.

Their adventures have shaped my perception of love, companionship, and the beauty of life. I am forever grateful for these four canines who have shown me the true meaning of unconditional love, loyalty, and the endless possibilities that come with embracing each moment.

So here's to twelve months, four dogs, and an everlasting bond—a journey that I will treasure for a lifetime.

“Change loves me, defines and stalks me like a laser-guided smart bomb. It comes at me in all forms, suddenly and with enormous impact, from making shifts in work to having and raising a kid to buying a cabin on a distant mountaintop. Sometimes, change comes on four legs.”

In his popular and widely praised Running to the Mountain, Jon Katz wrote of the strength and support he found in the massive forms of his two yellow Labrador retrievers, Julius and Stanley. When the Labs were six and seven, a breeder who’d read his book contacted Katz to say she had a dog that was meant for him—a two-year-old border collie named Devon, well bred but high-strung and homeless. Katz already had a full canine complement, but instinct overruled reason, and soon thereafter he brought Devon home.

A Dog Year: Twelve Months, Four Dogs, and Me is the story of how Devon and Jon—and Julius and Stanley—came to terms with each other. It shows how a man discovered a lot about himself through one dog (and then another) whose temperament seemed as different from his own as day is from night. It is a story of trust and understanding, of life and death, of continuity and change. It is by turns insightful, hilarious, and deeply moving.

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Jon Katz's Going Home.
