Whether you are an actor preparing for an audition, a drama student exploring new monologues, or simply someone who enjoys performing solo pieces, this comprehensive list of 100 short and effective monologues is here to inspire and help you find the perfect piece for your next performance.

Why Choose Short Monologues?

Short monologues offer a unique challenge for actors to captivate their audience within a limited timeframe. While longer monologues allow for more character development and storylines, short monologues require actors to create strong and impactful performances within a condensed time frame.

By choosing a short monologue, you can showcase your ability to engage your audience with precision, leaving a lasting impression in a matter of minutes. These brief performances require actors to carefully select words, gestures, and emotions to elicit a strong response from viewers, making them perfect options for auditions or shorter performance opportunities.

Exploring the Variety

In this list of 100 short and effective monologues, you will find a wide range of options to fit various genres, age groups, and moods. Whether you prefer dramatic, comedic, or even thought-provoking pieces, this collection has something for everyone.

From classic plays to contemporary works and everything in between, you can explore characters with diverse backgrounds, emotions, and objectives. This variety allows you to choose monologues that resonate with your personal experiences or helps you step into the shoes of characters you've never encountered before.

Finding Your Perfect Monologue

With 100 options to choose from, finding the ideal monologue might feel overwhelming at first. However, keep in mind the following tips to narrow down your selection:

  • Consider the genre you are most comfortable with or want to explore further.
  • Think about the intended age range of the character you wish to portray.
  • Reflect on the emotions you are passionate about expressing or exploring.
  • Consider the time limit of the performance or audition requirements.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can quickly identify monologues that align with your goals, interests, and abilities.

The Importance of Preparation

Once you have chosen a monologue, the real work begins. To truly make your performance shine, commit to thorough preparation. Memorize the lines, internalize the character's motivations, and experiment with different ways of delivering the monologue.

Remember, the story you are telling through your monologue should resonate with your own emotions and experiences. By connecting your personal journey with that of the character, you can bring depth and authenticity to your performance, captivating your audience and creating a memorable experience.

Having a vast selection of short and effective monologues to choose from can significantly enhance your acting journey. Take your time to explore these different options, connect with characters on a personal level, and challenge yourself to deliver powerful performances within a limited timeframe.

Remember, practicing and developing your craft is an ongoing process. The more you immerse yourself in the world of monologues and acting, the more you will grow and discover new facets of your talent. Embrace the process, have fun, and let these 100 short and effective monologues ignite your passion for the art of storytelling.

In this book are 100 one-minute, original, contemporary monologues for adult men and women, with a mixture of dramatic, comedic, romantic, and reflective pieces, in no certain order.
There are no setups for any of these monologues—no genders, no age ranges, no locations, and no backstories. This leaves them wide open for the actor to develop and move each character and scene in most any direction the actor chooses.
Most of these monologues are subtle, not requiring grandiose physical performances, because delivering natural, believable, conversational dialogue in front of a stationary camera is usually all that’s required to showcase an actor’s true ability. Often, less is more.
Q: Why perform original, unfamiliar monologues?
Excerpt: Though something from A Few Good Men sounds like a great challenge, you don’t want those people behind the camera at your audition comparing you to Jack Nicholson, or for that matter, to anyone else they’ve heard the same monologue from a hundred times. You don’t want them harkening back to another actor’s performance, you want them focused on you. Also, choosing monologues you’ve already seen and heard performed by other actors can easily lead you to mimic them rather than develop your own character and delivery for the piece. Remember, this is all about you and what you can bring to the scene.
Q: Will I need to explain the scene to my audience?
Excerpt: The monologues in this book are all original pieces, written as standalones, not requiring the observer to have any backstory explained to them in order to understand what the character is trying to convey in the scene.
Q: Why are these monologues only one minute?
Excerpt: One-minute monologues allow the actor to get in, show what they can do, and get out, making them perfect for auditions and classroom study. Always leave them wanting more.
Q: Why do I need so many monologues?
Excerpt: You’re not always going to be auditioning, but it never hurts to keep your chops up. The best recipe for success is to continue honing your craft. Practice, practice, practice.
Dave Kilgore is a longtime actor, pianist, composer, playwright, and author. He has written multiple books of monologues, scenes, flash fiction, and a novel.
