:
War has a way of transforming the lives of those involved, leaving an indelible mark on their memories and shaping their futures. This is the story of two young American boys who found themselves amidst the horrors of the French war trenches during World War I. Their experiences, both harrowing and inspiring, shed light on the sacrifices made by countless individuals during this tumultuous period in history.
The Journey to the Trenches:
Our story begins in the small town of Anytown, USA, where two childhood friends, James and Michael, eagerly enlisted in the military as soon as they turned eighteen. Fueled by patriotism and a shared sense of duty, they embarked on a journey that would take them thousands of miles away from the comfort of their homes.

After enduring rigorous training camps, the two boys were assigned to the American Expeditionary Forces and were soon on their way to Europe. They arrived in France, wide-eyed and full of anticipation, unaware of the horrors they would soon witness.
The Reality of the Trenches:
Upon arriving at the frontlines, James and Michael were immediately struck by the bleakness of the war-torn landscapes. The trenches, dirty and riddled with disease, became their new home for an unknown length of time. The stench of death and the constant sound of shelling became their daily companions, a stark contrast to their idyllic American upbringing.
Survival in the trenches was a constant battle against nature and the enemy. They witnessed comrades falling in combat, their youth and dreams forever stolen. Medical facilities were overrun with wounded soldiers, and diseases spread rapidly due to the unsanitary conditions. Yet, amidst the chaos, moments of camaraderie and resilience kept James and Michael going.
Acts of Heroism:
There were countless acts of heroism witnessed in those dark trenches. James and Michael, braving the perilous conditions, dedicated themselves to serving their fellow soldiers. They risked their lives on numerous occasions, rescuing injured comrades who were trapped in the chaos of battle.
One such incident forever etched in their memories was their desperate efforts to save a young soldier who had been buried alive after an explosion. With sheer determination and courage, they dug through the debris for hours until they finally uncovered him. This selfless act of heroism earned them the respect and admiration of their fellow soldiers, who hailed them as true American heroes.
The End of the War and Beyond:
Eventually, the end of the war brought a glimmer of hope to the trenches. James and Michael emerged from the horrors of battle as changed individuals, forever marked by their experiences. They returned to their homeland as war veterans, proud of their service but burdened by the memories that haunted their dreams.
Despite the challenges they faced upon their return, James and Michael displayed resilience and perseverance. They pursued higher education, as they believed that knowledge and understanding were the keys to a brighter future. Both men went on to lead successful lives, never forgetting the lessons they learned in those French war trenches.
:
The story of James and Michael serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals during times of war. Their journey from the safety of their American homes to the trenches of France unveils the true impact of war on young lives. Their courage and selflessness are a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity.
We must never forget the sacrifices made by those who fought in the trenches, as their stories help us understand the true cost of war and inspire us to strive for a world where such sacrifices are unnecessary.

Published originally in 1916, this novel written for young adults is the second in a trilogy (the first being “Two American Boys with the Allied Armies,” also ePublished by Travelyn Publishing) about two American boys searching for an estranged brother in war-torn Europe during World War I—the “Great War”—the story in some respects presaging the World War II story “Saving Private Ryan.” In this case, a Chicago father is grief-stricken at discovering he had years before falsely accused his older son of a crime, causing him to leave home and never come back. The father learns this prodigal son is now fighting with the British somewhere in Europe, and the younger son with his cousin is sent across the Atlantic to find and bring home the older brother, for a long-overdue reconciliation with his father.
Preparing old books for digital publication is a labor of love at Travelyn Publishing. We hold our digital versions of public domain books up against any others with no fear of the comparison. Our conversion work is meticulous, utilizing a process designed to eliminate errors, maximize reader enjoyment, and recreate as much as possible the atmosphere of the original book even as we are adding the navigation and formatting necessary for a good digital book. While remaining faithful to a writer’s original words, and the spellings and usages of his era, we are not above correcting obvious mistakes. If the printer became distracted after placing an ‘a’ at the end of a line and then placed another ‘a’ at the beginning of the next line (they used to do this stuff by hand you know!), what sort of mindless robots would allow that careless error to be preserved for all eternity in the digital version, too? Not us. That’s why we have the audacity to claim that our re-publications are often better than the originals.
