It is the first part of a three-phased approach to conducting railway precinct planning. The first phase provides a Situational Analysis of Railway Stations per region. The second phase provides the basis for a Rail Corridor Spatial Development Framework by developing criteria for analyzing station typologies. The third phase is the development of corridor-specific Rail Corridor Spatial Development Frameworks on the basis of specific station typologies and appropriate land use management provisions, including how Overlay Zones could be applied.
This book is the first phase, with a focus on the railway stations located within the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE). It presents a status quo analysis of railway stations within their immediate contexts. It records station information that would form a basis for status quo analysis in a given planning assignment. Firstly, the book presents a brief historical account of railways in South Africa. Secondly, it establishes the status quo through the application of the descriptive analysis method. Each station will be analyzed within its context in terms of public transport, land use and land ownership aspects.
