Living in Kenya has taught me to appreciate the simple things in life. As Imani, a resident of this beautiful country, I wanted to share my experiences and how they have shaped my outlook on life. From breathtaking landscapes to vibrant cultures, Kenya has a lot to offer. Join me as I take you on a journey through the simplicity and beauty of my everyday life in Kenya.

The Serenity of Nature

One of the things that captivates me every day in Kenya is the breathtaking nature that surrounds me. From the stunning Mt. Kenya to the vast savannahs of Maasai Mara, the natural beauty of this country is unparalleled. Every morning, I wake up to the chirping of birds and the warm African sun peeking through my window. Taking a walk through the nearby shamba (farm) gives me an opportunity to breathe in the fresh air and marvel at the beauty around me.

The Warmth of Community

Kenya is known for its tight-knit communities and the warmth they exude. The simplicity of life here is reflected in the strong bond people share with their neighbors and families. Every evening, my neighbors gather in the local "nyumba kumi" (small community) for a cup of chai and engaging conversations. It's heartwarming to see how everyone comes together to support each other, whether it's celebrating a joyous occasion or lending a helping hand in times of need.

The Melting Pot of Cultures

Kenya is a melting pot of diverse cultures, and this diversity adds vibrancy to everyday life. From the music to the clothing, each tribe brings its unique flavor to the mix. The rhythmic beats of traditional music and the colorful traditional attire make even the simplest of tasks feel like a celebration. Learning about different customs and traditions has expanded my horizons and deepened my appreciation for the rich cultural heritage that Kenya possesses.

The Joy of Simplicity

In a world consumed by materialism, Kenya has taught me the joy of simplicity. Life here revolves around the basic necessities, and the focus is on building relationships and cherishing moments rather than accumulating possessions. Sitting under the shade of an acacia tree, watching children play and share laughter is a daily reminder of the beauty that lies in the simple things. We find happiness in genuine human connections and the appreciation of the present moment.

The Spirit of Resilience

Amidst the simplicity and beauty, Kenya also faces its fair share of challenges. However, the spirit of resilience that prevails in this country is truly inspiring. People here have faced adversity with strength and determination, and it reflects in their unwavering positivity. From women breaking barriers in pursuing education to entrepreneurs thriving against all odds, Kenya is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. Being surrounded by such resilience serves as a constant reminder to never give up and to always strive for a better tomorrow.

Life with Imani in Kenya has been a transformative journey. Embracing the simplicity of everyday life has allowed me to find joy in the small things and appreciate the beauty that surrounds me. From the serenity of nature to the warmth of community and the richness of diverse cultures, Kenya has taught me invaluable lessons in gratitude, resilience, and the pursuit of happiness. So, come visit Kenya, where the simple things hold profound meaning, and experience life through a different lens.

Life With Imani in Kenya is a series of stories written from Rose’s memories of life in her country of birth; Kenya, Africa. Although her children were born in the United States, they always ask about life in Africa. And so Rose decided to write her stories and share them with children everywhere.

The series is told through the eyes of Imani, a young girl who lives in a small village in Kenya. Imani sees magic in the simplest things. Each day she finds more to appreciate while observing the sheer simplicity of life; the potential powers that lay within the smallest things that inevitably make them uniquely great.

The Simple Things Around Me is the first book in this series. Here we walk with Imani and her mother to the village market. Along the way Imani notices life’s somewhat hidden happenings, and wonders how it would feel to be each of the phenomena she sees. Soon she realizes that these phenomena are very similar to the care her mother gives, that her love is as powerful yet as simple. And so she decides - if there’s one thing she really wants to be, it’s her mother; sharing love each day as easily as the simplest things go about theirs.
