Windmill Hill: Historic Charm

Situated just east of Totterdown, Windmill Hill is a neighborhood steeped in history. Its name derives from the windmill that once perched at the top of the hill, serving as a symbol of the area's industrial past. Today, Windmill Hill retains its charm with a mix of beautifully preserved Georgian and Victorian architecture.

Explore the secret gardens and hidden squares tucked away in this neighborhood, providing peaceful sanctuaries away from the bustling city. If you're an avid reader, be sure to visit the iconic Windmill Hill City Farm Book Shop, housed within a converted chapel. This hidden gem offers a wide range of second-hand books and is renowned for its cozy atmosphere.

Bedminster: Thriving Urban Hub

Adjacent to Windmill Hill, Bedminster has transformed from an industrial area into a thriving urban hub. This vibrant neighborhood is known for its eclectic mix of independent shops, trendy cafes, and bustling markets. Take a stroll down North Street and explore the many shops offering unique finds, from vintage clothing to artisanal crafts.

Bedminster is also a food lover's paradise, with an array of restaurants serving diverse cuisines. From traditional British pub fare to international delights, there is something to satisfy every palate. Don't miss the Bedminster Winter Lantern Parade, where the streets come alive with illuminated lanterns crafted by the community.

Southville: Cultural Hotspot

Southville, located west of Bedminster, is a cultural hotspot bursting with creativity. This neighborhood is home to the famous Tobacco Factory, a converted tobacco warehouse that now houses a vibrant arts space. Catch a play, watch a live music performance, or explore the galleries and artist studios that call Southville home.

For those seeking a taste of the local scene, the weekly Tobacco Factory Sunday Market offers the perfect opportunity to try delicious street food and browse unique crafts. In the summer, Southville also hosts the Upfest - Europe's largest street art festival, where internationally renowned artists transform the neighborhood walls into stunning works of art.

Ashton: Nature's Retreat

Located to the southwest of Southville, Ashton is a peaceful retreat for nature lovers. This neighborhood is known for its picturesque countryside views and abundance of green spaces. Take a leisurely stroll along the Ashton Court Estate, a 850-acre estate boasting stunning gardens, woodlands, and breathtaking views of the Avon Gorge.

Ashton Court is also famous for hosting the annual Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, where hundreds of hot air balloons fill the sky with a colorful spectacle. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even book a balloon ride and experience Bristol from a whole new perspective.

From the vibrant and artistic streets of Totterdown to the serene natural beauty of Ashton, these neighborhoods offer a diverse range of experiences for residents and visitors alike. Whether you're attracted to the bustling urban scene, the rich historical charm, or the abundance of cultural activities, Totterdown, Windmill Hill, Bedminster, Southville, and Ashton have it all. Discover the unique character of each neighborhood and find your perfect place to call home in this thriving part of Bristol.

Once a sleepy rural community bordering the fields of North Somerset, the ancient Royal Manor of Bedminster spread along the banks of the River Avon, south of the City of Bristol. Today, this area comprises the vibrant suburbs of Totterdown, Windmill Hill, Bedminster itself, Southville and Ashton. The last 200 years have seen dramatic changes occur, as poor workers from the countryside flocked to this area in search of employment. With the help of before and after photographs a real sense of that change emerges; we see where local people lived and worked, and how they relaxed. Many of the shops, churches, pubs and factories have disappeared and the modern photographs show their replacements. Daily life has also altered trams and horse carts have disappeared, but the vitality and community spirit is still in full view.
