The Forgotten Diary
History often forgets the personal stories, the individual experiences that provide a deeper understanding of the past. The diary we are about to unveil is one such story. Hidden away in the archives of a local historical society, it offers an intimate and personal account of life at Fort Warren during one of the bloodiest periods in American history.

A Captive's Journey
The diary's author, John Anderson, a young Confederate soldier, found himself imprisoned in Fort Warren after being captured in battle. As the diary unfolds, it reveals the daily struggles, fears, and hopes of a young man torn away from his family and country.
Anderson's descriptions of the prison conditions are vivid and chilling. He writes of the damp cells that seeped with cold, the meager rations, and the constant surveillance by Union guards. Yet, amidst the hardships, his resilient spirit and unwavering determination shine through.
The annotated version of the diary gives us valuable insights into the historical context of each entry. Readers gain a deeper understanding of the events unfolding on the national stage, such as the assassination of President Lincoln and the aftermath of the Emancipation Proclamation. Anderson's emotions and reactions to these pivotal historic moments make the diary even more poignant.
An Unexpected Friendship
One of the diary's most intriguing elements is the unexpected friendship that blossoms between Anderson and a Union soldier, David Thompson. Despite their opposing loyalties, the two men find common ground and develop a deep bond during their time as prisoners. Their conversations, debates, and shared experiences provide a unique perspective on the complexities of war and the power of human connection.
Thompson, who sympathizes with Anderson's plight, provides a different lens through which to view the conflict. His reflections on the reasons behind the war and the moral questions it raises challenge readers to question their own beliefs and prejudices.
Unmasking History
This annotated diary serves as a reminder that history is more than just dates and facts. It is the collective experiences of individuals, each with their own hopes, fears, and dreams. In documenting the everyday life of a prisoner, it sheds light on a lesser-known aspect of the Civil War and humanizes those who were caught in its tumultuous grip.
As we delve into the pages of this forgotten diary, we are confronted with the harsh realities of war and the resilience of the human spirit. Anderson's words echo through time, reminding us of the sacrifices made by men and women on both sides of the conflict.
A Treasure Rediscovered
Thanks to the tireless efforts of historians and archivists, John Anderson's diary has been rescued from obscurity and made available to the public. The meticulously annotated version of the diary allows readers to fully immerse themselves in the historical context and gain a deeper appreciation for the struggles faced by those held captive at Fort Warren.
So, embark on a journey through time and explore the extraordinary account of a Confederate soldier's experiences at Fort Warren. Experience the emotions, witness historic events, and discover the power of friendship in the face of adversity. John Anderson's diary offers an invaluable insight into a forgotten chapter of American history.

This book contains biographical sketches of the unusual life of Alexander Hamilton Stephens, who is best known as the Vice-President of the Confederate States of America. Because of his position in the defeated government, he was sent to military prison for a period of time, and much of this book is taken from his diaries of that time-period.
The reader will gain insight into this diminutive and sickly man who was a giant intellectually. Not born into wealth and orphaned at an early age, his struggle to educate himself and become a lawyer is particularly moving. He had an interest in and did much for the education of the poor throughout his lifetime. Especially astute in government, he served in the United States House of Representatives. Because they were both members of the Whig political party, Stephens and Abraham Lincoln knew each other fairly well; at least well enough that Lincoln was prompted on December 22, 1860 to write a “For your eyes only” letter to Stephens declaring he would not interfere with the institution of slavery. Both men changed in their original stated views: Stephens on secession and Lincoln on slavery. This is discussed in more detail in the book.
It might surprise one to learn that Stephens was an ardent Unionist, seriously opposed to secession. However, when his home state of Georgia severed her ties with the Federal Union, he supported her. He is the one principally responsible for the composition of the Constitution of the Confederate States of America, adding improvements where he felt they were needed.
Perhaps better known are his differences with President Jefferson Davis' who, in Stephens opinion, “micro-managed” the war. Stephens opposed the suspension of habeas corpus and the conscription of soldiers by the Confederate government. (The Federal government also suspended habeas corpus and conscripted soldiers). He deeply believed in a negotiated peace to end the war. However, other differences with Davis, perhaps overstated by some historians, are explained and extrapolated upon in this book. This is a book that everyone seeking a better understanding of the War Between the States should read.
This classic work is not reproduced by the use of optical recognition software, nor is it simply scanned from the original. It has been completely re-typeset by a real person and therefore it is compatible with the applications of the electronic reader. Significant annotations and additional information as well as translations of Latin terms and phrases, bonus information such as the Stephens Memorial Service Funeral by famous 19th century preacher, T. Dewitt Talmage, an article from the “Confederate Veteran” magazine (1922) on the Stephens monument, and fourteen newly added illustrations update the volume and make it come alive to the modern reader.
