When it comes to exploring ancient wonders and uncovering hidden tales of the past, few places rival the captivating county of Devon in southwestern England. With its rich heritage, picturesque landscapes, and countless legends, this charming region offers a meandering walking experience like no other. Prepare to embark on a journey filled with historical mysteries, mythical legends, and breathtaking scenery as we delve into the wonders of Devon.

The Enigmatic Tors of Dartmoor

Nestled in the heart of Devon lies the wild and rugged Dartmoor National Park, home to one of England's most enigmatic landscapes. Dotting the moorland are ancient granite formations known as tors, which have long fascinated both locals and visitors alike. These towering rocks bear witness to centuries of history, shrouded in legends and stories waiting to be discovered.

As you meander through the rolling hills, you'll encounter the iconic Haytor Peak, a majestic tor that offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Legend has it that the rocks of Haytor were placed by giants, adding an air of mystery to this already fascinating place.

Another must-visit tor is Hound Tor, rumored to be the inspiration behind Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous novel "The Hound of the Baskervilles." Explore the atmospheric ruins of the medieval village at its base and let your imagination run wild as you ponder the legendary tales that weave through this ancient monument.

The Mysteries of Exeter Cathedral

No visit to Devon would be complete without experiencing the charm and grandeur of Exeter Cathedral. Dating back to the 12th century, this magnificent structure is not only a remarkable feat of architecture but also harbors its fair share of mysteries.

One of the cathedral's most intriguing features is the Exeter Riddles, a collection of enigmatic carvings scattered throughout the building. These intricate puzzles have puzzled scholars for centuries, with their true meanings still remaining a mystery. As you wander through the cathedral, keep an eye out for these perplexing riddles and let your imagination wander as you speculate about their hidden messages.

The cathedral's underground passages, known as the Exeter Cathedral Close, also hold their secrets. Rumored to have been used by monks and even as a hiding place during times of war, these hidden tunnels have witnessed countless events throughout history. Embark on a guided tour to delve into the depths of the cathedral's hidden passageways and unravel their intriguing past.

The Spellbinding Legends of Lynton and Lynmouth

Perched atop towering cliffs overlooking the Bristol Channel lies the enchanting twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth. Known as the "Lands of Exmoor's Giants," these picturesque towns are steeped in magical legends and captivating folklore.

One such tale is the legend of the "Lorna Doone," an infamous romance set amidst the wild landscapes of Exmoor National Park. Inspired by the real-life bandits who once roamed these lands, this gripping love story has captured the hearts of countless readers and stands as a testament to the region's enduring allure.

Take a leisurely stroll along the scenic coastal path known as the Watersmeet Trail and immerse yourself in the stunning beauty that surrounds you. As you walk, listen closely for the whispering voices of the past and let the tales of smugglers and shipwrecks transport you to a time long gone.

Devon's meandering walking paths pave the way for an unforgettable journey through history, mysteries, and legends. From the timeless tors of Dartmoor to the enigmatic carvings of Exeter Cathedral and the spellbinding tales of Lynton and Lynmouth, this captivating county offers a fascinating blend of natural wonders and captivating stories from the past.

This book contains ten circular walks between the distances of 1.5 miles to 5.5 miles, each of the chapters as an easy to follow format, where to start and places or things to lookout for along the way. The chapters each covers something from history, a mystery or legend which in some cases can be extremely interesting. The terrain on the walks varies considerably from open fields, green lanes, woodland, country lanes or open moorland. So with this in mind be sure to dress sensibly with warm wet proof/cold resistant clothing, for example temperatures on the moors can be 5 degrees lower than the mainland. Most important make sure you wear good footwear, ideally walking boots to keep feet dry give good support for the feet and ankles on very uneven ground. Please whenever you are out and about make sure you follow the Countryside Code, gates are normally shut by the farmers to keep farm animals in, sometimes they may be left open so animals can reach food or water. So be sure to leave gates as you find them or follow instructions on any signs on the gate. On some of these walks with historical places be careful not to disturb ruins or historical sites because our heritage is for the future not just for the past.
